So, before I try my luck at Google, here's what I'm wanting:
A calender program that allows one to set appts. and such to sometime in the future, complete with description, date/time, etc. and a "set alarm to go off xyz before appt." My cell phone has such a calender, but its alarm is so puny that often I don't hear it, and have forgotten about the appt until it is over. (Yes, I've turned up the volume so it's loud, but it's not loud enough). I do use the computer often enough that I'd see the alert (so I want a "pop up" alert, maybe not something that fills the screen, but enough to be noticed...options to have a pop-up, an alarm/beep/audio alert, etc) And it has to run whenever Windows starts up, completely in the background unless/until a reminder shows. Free is best, but I don't mind paying a little if it's a good program. Any ideas before I google? |

Google Calendar does everything you asked for and more. I use it all the time. I've got a sidebar widget that has my calendar up all of the time so it's easy to see anytime I'm at the computer. It also integrates well with Android OS cell phones. I use it on my Moto Droid and really like it. I have my calendar setup to send me text messages 15 minutes before all of my appointments and it works without fail. Give it a try. I betcha like it! |

Thanks, I just tried it out...but I'm looking for a stand-alone calender, not one that is dependent on a browser (I'm using Firefox + Windows XP)
I also couldn't get an alarm/popup function to work (couldn't find it, if it's there)....set an "alarm" to go off in 2 mins, went and browsed other sites (keeping Google Calender open) until the time had passed, with no alert about the alarm. Unless I'm missing something...? |

Just discovered one on my Win XP computer....microsoft works/calender....I "pinned" it to the Start menu, so I can open it up easily. (I usually put such things on my "quicklaunch", but that plate's too full already)
It has a pop-up alert + sound (dependent on volume settings, of course), times can be set to the minute (ie, "3:37 PM"; the default pull down times are on the half-hour but can be manually typed in). Set the time once and "x"'d out, to see if it would still alert without having it open, and it DID popup/alert. Works well enough for me...! |
