The laptop is a Compaq Presario V6305NR

It came with Windows Vista. I installed a larger hard drive and installed Ubuntu. Everything has been working fine for  months. This year I flew to California to visit my sister, laptop in my checked luggage. Everything fine there. Flew home, laptop in checked luggage. Now it has trouble booting. From the first boot after getting home from the airport. Blank screen, the DVD drive clicks every now and then. I just keep turning it off and back on and eventually I get the Compaq boot screen and everything proceeds normally from there.

i still have the original hard drive with Vista. My next step will be to put that back in and try it.

Any ideas?

If your bag was dropped or thrown (baggage handlers are quick, not gentle) then your hard drive might have taken a hit that messed up one of the motors or possibly scratched something against the hard drive.  I forget how I got to it when my laptop was having problems but somewhere in the BIOS there should be a way to run a diagnostic on the hard drive.
