I have no idea how or what happened but after downloading my e-mails yesterday I lost the ability to read any previously read e-mails.

Nothing in the preview pane and if I open the e-mail in another page, empty. Hit reply or forward..same thing.

Has this ever happened to anyone else?

What version of windows? Are you running any real time protections? Thunderbird stores all email in a single file called inbox. if you have real time virus protection and it cleans by deletion you might have had your inbox removed.

You also can find your profile and look for a file called inbox.msf which is an index file. SAVE a copy of this file on a thumb drive or something  and then delete it from you hard drive then relaunch thunderbird and see if that helps

I'm running xp. The e-mails are still showing in my inbox (subject, sender, etc) but the message text is gone.

well I "indexed" my inbox after a person on the google forums suggested it.

that fixed the problem..all those e-mails disappeared..
