Ok, we have an older motorola docsis1.0 modem and the wife is complaining about speed. Looked at our provider and they recommend a docsis3.0 modem to take advantage of the speed they offer.

If we upgrade to a docsis3.0 modem will we have to upgrade the router as well? Do they make a unit that will do both all in one? I have been looking some, but it all looks greek to me.

You shouldn't have to upgrade the router because it should already be 10/100 ethernet which is the fastest the CAT5 cabling will go. The speed increase you will see by upgrading to a docsis 3.0 modem is on your external link to the cloud.

I recommend the Linksys or Motorola modems.

Thanks, That helps alot.

So how is the Motorola SB6120? Is Lynksis better?

I like my 6120. Had it for a little over a year now and it has been trouble free.

I assume you've got Cox? See if they'll let you trade it in for a new model, they're fairly tough
Never had a problem with Linksys modems, but their routers are trash

Careful here. I recently dumped my wireless router for two separate devices. I'm now running a Linksys router and a DLink wireless access point. I had an older Linksys (probably v1.0 or so) and it was painfully so. Removing the router from the mix and going right to the cable modem bumped me from about 6MB to 24MB. I couldn't find a firmware update so I bought a new version of the same model. It's cruising steady at 24MB. So there MAY be an issue with the router as well. If you swap modems and it's still slow try upgrading the router firmware. You might even try this before you buy a new modem.

Part in red is wrong. CAT5 will do Gigabit Ethernet.

If you subscribe to a service with a 65 megs download speed or less, a router with 100 Mbps ports should not be a bottleneck.  If you are subscribing to a service with download speeds higher than that it's time to spring for a new router with Gigabit ports.  Note that if you'll be using a wireless connection between your PC and router, you'll want 802.11n.  802.11g will be a bottleneck with a max throughput of about 24 MBps.  802.11n should get you about double that, depending upon the WiFi card, your OS, and drivers.

I recommend the Motorola SB6120 DOCSIS 3.0 modem.  If I had to buy one that's what I'd get.
