Dont know to much about photograpy and cameras, but i would like to learn. I have a sony digital camera right now but want something with a lens. I like the fact that with digital cameras you can view the photo before you have them printed, not sure if you can with other cameras or not. Looking to take photos for Sports, Shooting, Family events etc. Could someone help me out?

With a Digital SLR (referred to as a DSLR on most websites), you get the interchangeable lenses, the ability to use various filters with those lenses, and since it records the image digitally, the added bonus of being able to review the picture you just took. You can also delete the really awful shots right then and there.

I can only comment on Nikon cameras (and only a few of those), but the D40 or D60 either one, is an excellent camera to start with.

Boy, that's a huge question.

I'm primarily a youth sports photographer but I also do portraits and some wedding work. Specific questions are more productive.

dpreview.com   good to go...look at the 'Buyers Guide' section to compare various cameras
robgalbraith.com     good to go
fredmiranda.com   meh kinda muddy waters from what little I've read so far
kenrockwell.com    same as miranda for me

If you go with Nikon check out nikondigitutor.com.  Also look for the Nikon School to see if it stops by close to you.
For Canon check out  Canon Digital Learning Center for more Canon info.

As for a recommendation....Canon or Nikon...the two biggest DSLR choices you can have...both are VERY GOOD and you will have fanboys for both.  Years ago I went Canon because at the time (back in the EOS 10-Elan days of 35mm film) they had Nikon beat when it came to AF-autofocus...now days its tit for tat as far as glass goes. In the big picture Canon & Nikon account for 90% plus of the DSLR market with Sony, Pentax & Olympus taking 8% followed by Panasonic & Leica.  In my opinion they are all good but you will have more choices if you go w/ either Nikon or Canon.

Different things to consider;
*whats your budget for the camera...lens or lenses...speedlite....memory cards...card reader...hard drive or CD/DVD file storage.  You can find some REALLY crazy inter kit prices (google Sonic Camera for some entertainment)...most are crap others I wonder where they come from.  But expect a DSLR kit to start at $500 + for new & current gear.
*sensor size bigger is better BUT its a slippery slope...bigger sensor bigger file sizes...bigger file sizes the more hard drive space also more RAM needed  to push big files around...big files can be slow w/ older slower memory cards & card readers...personally I would start w/ an 8mp or bigger sensor
*newly announced or current or recently replaced or over 2 generations old-see dpreview.com for when your choice was made & for reviews.
*availability of stuff from friends or local store-I'm in the Atlanta area & we are blessed w/ Photo Barn, Showcase, Professional Photographers Resource, KEH and others I can't remember...all these places have guys that know their stuff & can put a camera in your hands...if you choose to buy a box on line or from chain good luck on getting specific help...forums are good but a good shop will get you the right stuff the first time so you can hit the ground running.
*lenses...most will go along w/ 2 to 3 lenses to cover what most shooters will cover...however there are lenses that will be one lens for ALL...yeah they will but not as sharp as a lens that covers a wide, middle or long range...and specially not as sharp as a fixed focal length

I could go on & on & on & on & on & on & on but I'll hold short & what for more questions from the OP.

Based on my experience running into rockwell at the PMA show a couple of years ago he's just a talking piece. I'd take what he says with a grain of salt. Some of it's good, some of it isn't. You just have to bounce against other sources and not take his site as gospel.

Another Nikon site is nikonians.org.
