So I'm trying to create a team logo. I can't figure out the layers deal. I'm just trying to get a a cool looking "KC" put in the pic on the right. Can someone help me or teach me. Much appreciated.

Here is what I'm working with:

Ultimately I would need it to be 300x200.

Layers are easy.  Click on the "layers" menu at the top, pick "new layer".  Voila, a new layer.  Put your text or whatever you're trying to overlay on the new layer, it is separate from the background image while you're working in the new layer.

Ok check it out. Not fishing for compliments looking for suggestions to make it better. Thanks

Looks good.

This is purely opinion, but I might suggest roughing up your added logo to better match the background/face in the picture. By roughing up, I mean possibly making it darker, dented/scratched, singed, dirty, etc. JMO... no offense taken if that's not what you're wanting.

I'd also probably stick with a clean solid border (black or white), as opposed to the rounded gradient border.

Agreed. I'll try and figure that out.

One thing I would do would be to select the layer with the "KC" logo on it, go to the "Layer" toolbar at top, select "Matting" (at very bottom on my version) and "Defringe" and use the 1 pixel.  It should take that real slight white edge off there.

You could also experiment with the "outer glow" effects.  Use in moderation, they can easily be used in excess.

If I understand what steenkybastage is describing, here are some tutorials that might help:  http://tutorialblog.org/grunge-photoshop-tutorials/  Those can help give a worn/distressed look to the KC logo.  What I do when experimenting is to create a duplicate layer of the "KC", then if you don't like the results, you can simply delete it, rather than undo a bunch of changes.

For the border, maybe you could try a gold or sample one of the colors of the flames?
