Im relatively intelligent with a computer, my parents got me a cool little basic pocket cam corder that takes pretty decent movies to post at home and on YouTube.

What would be a good movie editing software to be able to splice/add music/effects etc?

If you are using Windows XP or greater, there is a built in movie editing software called "Windows Movie Maker"

To access it, press Start > All Programs > Windows Movie Maker

It has a movie reel icon if that helps you find it. Mac computers also have a preinstalled software. Not sure what it's called though. If you need to do more advanced movie editing software, check out Sony Vegas. It's a little expensive, but gets the job done!

Hope this helps!

I like Adobe Premiere Elements. I wanted more flexibility than Movie Maker but didn't need the power of the full Premiere edition.

What format does it output as? The reason I ask is MovieMaker on XP is picky with the formats it will take; but I don't know about the Vista version. Before you buy,  make sure what you are getting will work. For example, Premiere Pro will not work with ACHDV, AFAIK, w/o an extra program, so don't assume anything.

For basic stuff, MovieMaker should do ya just fine. There IS a Moviemaker 2 you can download from MS, also. I also have some software from Sony that I paid $100 for, but I would steer clear of Sony...their product support isn't worth shit.

Helpful (maybe) hint: If you use DVD Shrink or another program to back-up DVDs, if you change the ".VOB" file extensions to ".mpg" you can edit them with Movie maker.
