Ok so my friend has just got out of highschool and wants to pursue a life in photography.

He is willing to spend 800-1200 on a good high end camera.

It has to be digital, good resolution, able to use lenses, etc.

Let me know, thanks!

Nikon D80 is at the top of the pack right now for DSLRs in that budget range...
If he can't obtain one of those, got for a Canon Digital Rebel XTi...

While the D80 is in his price range, If he wants to pursue Photography professionally, the extra $$ for the D200 are well worth it.  Magnesium Body, weather seals etc...

Get the d80 over the d200 use the extra money saved and put it towards high end lenses.  After you start making money jump up to the D2X's.

and save money for new memory cards since the D2x(s) uses CF instead of the D80s SD

Or go Cannon 30D so you have the lenses when you crash up against the limitations of crop bodies.  you can have the magnesium body with 5FPS and free software worth a damn.

Body only is less than 1K

Nikon or Canon, I would go with the D80 if it were me, but I am biased towards Nikon.

I have a Digital Rebel XT (and I'm probably going to get a Powershot SD700 IS for a point and shoot); basically I'm a Canon guy.

But I still say go with the Nikon D80. It's hands-down the winner in this generation of entry-level DSLRs...

If only for the decent viewfinder...

The camera really matters little. I would get a camera that he can wear-out and will hold-up, but not spend too much. The lenses is where it's at (and the guy behind the camera). I just bought the Sony Alpha A100 and am very happy with that. I wanted the Canon 30D, but it was out of my range for now. If your friend can muster the full $1200, then he can get the Nikon D80 with kit lens for around that amount. That would be a great start, and he'd want to get into the good lenses as soon as possible. Where any camera is really found lacking is if all you have is the kit lens. They just aren't fast enough or clear enough to satisfy someone who's serious about photography. Digital cameras come and go, but good lenses are an investment.
