You'll remember my photos earlier in the year of woodcock nests in evil clearcuts; turns out Mourning Dove also like to nest amongst the desolate and destroyed managed timberlands.

Here's a nice shady spot mama dove decided would be the perfect nest location; nestled under 1 year-old pine seedlings.  Well, perfect until somebody like me comes tromping through to check last year's planted survival.

All hail the clearcut!

Cruising BIG WOOD today. 215 tons/acre (that's about 9 tractor-trailer loads of logs per acre).  New record for me in pine.

Also some ginormous hardwood mixed in; this is a 36" diameter Cherrybark Oak that had about 56 feet of merchantable stem.  This one tree is worth close to $1,500 on the stump.

And see this little 27 inch diameter loblolly pine?  It was only 154 feet tall.  Tallest one I've ever measured.

Is that the Tamron 150-600?

I found the sweet spot for sharpness was about f/9; pretty much left it there at all times.  That led to ISO noise issues I didn't like, so I ended up selling it and going with the Nikon 200-500.  Cost me 100mm of reach, but gained sharpness and aperture, and that was worth it to me.

Yeah, the G2 version.   It definitely requires a lot of light.

I think next time I spend a week in Yellowstone or someplace "special" I will just rent that new 800mm Z.

I've reached the limit of the 200-500.  Subject is about 750 feet away.  Plus there's all this damn Canuckistan smoke in the air.
