If it wasn't for everyone having their cellphone out, it feels like photos from the 80's. Maybe the asthetic he wasn't going for, but it kinda works in my eye.

No worries. I was about 75ish yards away and imo the light wasn't great. I have been mostly shooting in  manual mode and I'm still learning how best to get the most out of the camera.

I did some post work  in darktable and raw therapee but in reality my pics weren't that great to start and they were difficult to clean up.

I was maybe 12 feet away at 500mm.  And the image is cropped.

But today, whilst chasing the wily Tom, I happened upon a nice little Pink Ladyslipper colony.  I've never really read up on them, while they're mot common, they're not exactly rare, in my neck of the woods.  They do require some pretty specific site conditions, particularly low pH, acidic soils.  In the wild they need soils pH to be a maximum of 5, and thrive in the 4-4.5 range.  They say for culture, water them with a solution of 2 oz of vinegar to 1 gallon of water to maintain pH.

Got the orchids, Tom got the best of me.

This is the best I've come up with and it's using a 200mm and cropped to about 80%. I'm relying on megapixels because of the lack of availability of Z series lenses.

what would you recommend for an old Nikon D3100 that won't break the bank?  I have a 55-300 but could use a little more reach and clarity.

Bite the bullet and get an upgraded body. D7xxx or better. You can pick up a used D7100 for under $400.

For glass, the 70-300 is a much better lens, but it’s still a 300.

I went the Tamron 150-600 route first, but now use a Nikon 200-500. It’s that much better that it was worth the 100mm sacrifice, for me.

There’s a lot of not-so-hot zooms out there, you get above 200-300 mm and buy once cry once.

Here’s an older shot with the same lens and body D500

I gave my older brother this Esee several years ago for Christmas as he was a huge outdoorsman.  He passed away in March and I ended up getting the knife back.  It's been used hard, used well, and earned it's patina.  Still super sharp though.

The Glock was his pocket pistol, I added a new front sight and Pearce bottom plate, but it'll be going everywhere with me now.

Was on the fence whether I should post this. Heavily expired and not properly stored Agfachrome. Expired in the mid 80's and was kept in someone's closet until given to me for free. Shot it at box speed on a Pentax 6X7, processed professionally in a lab, but scanned at home. I kind of dig the overall mood of it. Have a few more boxes I will probably shoot as well for fun.

I’d never heard of this tree before, and as you may know I like to think I know a thing or two about trees.

C. Justus Brouwers, the first landscape superintendent for The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, is said to have found the tree during a walk in the Pungo woods near Virginia Beach, Virginia. According to local legend, Brouwers transplanted the young tree to Williamsburg, probably sometime between 1932 and 1936, around the time of the Colonial capital’s restoration.

Aside from it being a big-ass tree, the most interesting thing to me about it is it’s a naturally occurring hybrid between Live oak and overcup oak. Live oak, Quercus virgiana , is native to Virginia, but Williamsburg is literally the extreme northern edge of its range. Likewise, overcup  Quercus lyrata is native, but also at the very edge of its range.

Never Give Up (Deciduous Edition)

I've observed this tree for several years as it began losing its "footing" on the steep bank of this stream in a park near my home. A strong storm a few years ago forever denied its vertical standing in the forest - but the tree has not given up. It's very much alive and sprouting new branches.

Here's the same tree in 2018:

Ha! I tried (again) to capture the interest of those roots on my outing this weekend.

And failed (again) to translate it to as interesting an image as the 3D experience.
