Thinking about one once the old income tax refund comes home. I looked at their web site & see three different levels of features. I don't want to pay for things I'll never use nor need, but I also don't want buyer's remorse.

I plan on using mine for kayaking & motorcycling. I doubt I'd do video & will almost certainly stick to stills.

The top of the line GoPro is "only" $399 & the chest harness is another $39 or so.

For those whom have one, please share your experiences.

Thanks in advance!

I just got a 3+ for Xmas. I have been using it in the headmount for videoing my performance in shooting matches (USPSA, 3-Gun). It is very wide angle (targets look further than they are) but the image is high quality. Sound sucks though, as you would expect for something inside a waterproof box. I'm not sure how much sense it makes just for stills... seems like overkill.

Well, I'm not sure either, which is why I'm asking. I have a waterproof camera but it's handheld & operated, which makes it a PITA when riding or kayaking. GoPro seems to solve these issues, IMO.

Why photo only? You can do both.

Do you plan on just using the photos for web viewing/sharing? I know the white edition is only like a 5MP camera, even the hero2 was better then that at like 10MP or something. If I were you I would just go with the middle of the ground silver edition.

To get better sound use the skelton housing or go pros 'the frame'. Though that offers little (no) protection from the elements. You can also change the settings to a narrow FOV but still it's a one focal length camera so there is only so much you can do!
Here is a quick bike ride with no PP work but you get the idea, still trying to figure it all out. It's a black 3+.

Video player isn't the greatest either..

You need good video editing software, a mandatory Adobe Premiere and After Effects to make your footage shine. Otherwise, it looks pretty plain. Shoot at low fps to get the film effect.

I'm just not real into video. My Nikon D600 does both & I have yet to shoot my first second of video. It simply has NO appeal to me.

I would like some fast lens speed, fast fps options & so forth. As I mention, I will use it extensively for kayaking & would like a fast series of shots (jpegs).

Again, I don't want either buyer's remorse & get a lower tiered camera, nor do I wish to pay too much f stuff I neither need nor want. Which is why I would like GoPro owners to fill my ignorant self in on which model suits my needs best?

Thanks!

You do know you have different settings as far as wide angle mode go right?

I don't recall the specifics but there are settings like,  1080 medium,  1080 narrow,  1080 protune,   and 1080 ultra wide.

I don't mess with the still side on my GoPro unless I am looking for a specific shot,  the video definition is good enough that I will just nab a screen shot from the video.

This is off of an original hero HD,  from a 1080 video.

Get the skeleton case... sound is better...
Also, you can plug constant power to it if you attach it to your windshield to record road trips...

I"m still rocking my GoPRO HD Hero (model just before the Hero2)

I've used it skydiving (everything from HALO (even had one jump where it was secured
to the wing of the King Air we jumped out of) to Hop-n-Pops)

bicycle rides

ATV rides

zip lines

diving

cenote diving (jumping in from 60')

I think you would be well served with a Hero2 and anything newer for the features they have.
there is LOTS of parts/accessories available for ALL models, GoPro's,
regardless of model, are very plentiful.

that said, the new HERO models use different batteries and some camera mounted accessories.
these would be a bit "safer" for the future upgrade possibilities, not to mention the better picture and battery life.
(not to say that the picture quality is crap on the HD or newer cameras, I've got some footage that looks great on a HDTV.  the only issue I've found with mine is
that it doesn't do well in low light conditions.)

I bought the Hero3 Black because it has an upgraded lens, good low-light performance, has a narrow FOV mode, and can shoot at 240fps (albeit at the lower WVGA resolution.) It does shoot 120fps @ 720p, which ain't bad.

I like slo-mo.

I've had the Hero 3 Black edition for almost a year now, awesome camera for capturing video, but I would think it would be overkill for just stills
If you can get one for cheaper than retail than go for it, but a quick check of Amazon shows a pretty good alternative (and cheaper) selection.

Yeah, I've already got a waterproof camera now & use it while kayaking. Problem is, I'm unaware of either a chest harness for it or a remote as the GoPro offers. Maybe I need to shop/look a bit harder?

Thanks for the link, BTW.
