I think we're gonna need a bigger crop.

Not bad, a bigger crop would look sharper, you can try some contrast too.  What ISO are you shooting at, it looks like you have some decent noise?  You shouldn't really have to go too high with the ISO as the moon is pretty bright.

I am still new at photography and I was just playing with the shutter speeds. The camera was set at ISO 800. I am still learning all the features of my camera. I cropped the photo for the details of the moon surface. My lens only zooms to 250mm.

Try using the Sunny 16 Rule.  It applies well to the moon.

Does your camera have live view/exposure simulation?

Yes but I have yet to use it. I haven't had my camera that long and I haven't had any formal photography training with DSLR cameras just your basic point and shoot jobs. I took one shot with the camera on auto and all I got was a bright dot in the sky so I just tried to limit light with using a fast shutter. I am in need of a photography class but can't seem to find the time.
