I have a CD with a bunch of JPGs and NEF files on them. I can see the JPGs but the others aren't even showing up on the list of what's on the disc. Is there something I can download to be able to see them, to be able to copy them onto my hard drive and work with them?

Thanks,

Snow

What platform are you using?  Windows?  What photo-editing software do you have?
How are you trying to see the files?  Most OS-standard image viewers won't display NEFs.  If you are using windows try the following:
I don't know your level of computer knowledge, so if you haven't already, try the following:
Go to START, right click, and then scroll up to "EXPLORE" and left click
Highlight the CD drive and open any folder that may have your files.
Highlight the NEF files, right click and "copy"
Highlight the folder on your hard-drive where you want to place the NEF files and then right click and "paste".
That should get them on your computer.
Now you'll need something that will open the NEFs.  Adobe Camera Raw
will read Nikon NEF files, works with Elements (and Lightroom and CS5,
etc...).  I use Adobe products so I'm not familiar with other
photo-editors.
Hope this was of some help.

When I look at the CD, after clicking on explore, only the JPGs show up. I can't even see the NEF files to copy them to my hard drive. I'm planning on downloading a free photo editor to work with them.

Any idea what's going on?

That's odd.  Mine show in explore, on both XP and 7.  The image will not display nor thumbnail, but it shows up as DSC_2505.nef
Are the photo files (jpgs and NEFs) in a folder on the CD?  If so, try copying the entire folder to your hard-drive.  (Then you can delete any duplicates.)
Let me play around a bit and see if I can find anything.  And maybe someone else who has seen this or knows what it is can chime in.

Edit - what view are you using to "see" the files?  Go to the menu bar and click on "view", then go down and click on "list" and see if that changes anything for you.  Still looking at other stuff.

I'm running Vista. I was expecting to see the pics listed, but not thumbnails, like you said, but so far they just don't show up. They're on the CD without a folder. I've had files I couldn't open before, but I could at least see their names and sizes... this is odd.

I was there when my photog burned the disc, so I know they have to be on there....

Ack!  I know next to nothing about Vista, and what little I have used it was very aggravating.
Only other thing I can think of was to right click on the folder with the pictures and go to properties and see if the files were marked "hidden" for some reason, but if they were burned to the disc without a folder... moot point?
Are you sure the photog burned the NEFs?  Might check with him.  Maybe he can burn a new disc for you if need be?
Sorry, but I am out of ideas.  Maybe someone else knows what might work.

Thanks for your help.

I just hate to have to wait for him to convert them to jpgs. I'll take the disk to school with me and see if they show up using a different OS. I won't be able to do anything with them there, as they're artsy and a tad naughty.

You're welcome - sorry I wasn't able to figure anything out for you.

Artsy and naughty?  Oh my...

If worse comes to worse, you can (hopefully) convert them to Adobe DNG files.  It's Adobe's free "universal" RAW file.  The program can be downloaded at the link provided.

I have a Microsoft RAW viewer, and Nikon's codec for NEF files, for you to look at them with Window's Picture and Fax viewer. To actually DO anything with them, I *think* ViewNX 2 is free from Nikon.

get irfanview (free) or acdsee (unfree) to be able to view the NEFs without too much hassle.
