A friend and I are working on a youtube talk show where we will be videotaped. Right now, our current camera setup consists of my Sony CyberShot camera in video mode and my friends analog video camera that isn't much better.

I am looking for compact video camera that can record in HD quality and has the option of hooking up an external microphone (ideally, up to 5 or 6 microphones). I am fine with either Flash or Hard Drive type memory. Additionally, it has to work well in all types of lighting conditions.

This camera will also be used for my own personal movie projects.

Any ideas?

What do you consider compact?

Something the size of a Sony Handycam - which is about the same size as an open hand.

I'm kind of in the same boat.

I'm not a camera nut and I'm looking for a good HD camera for hunting applications. I need something that works well in low light and not huge since I'll be toting this around by myself along with a rifle and a backpack.

Whichever one you get, and it will depend on your budget, stick with Panasonic or Sony and you will be fine.

What about Canon? I called Crutchfield and the sales rep said that they sell a lot of those. He was also pretty pushy about it, so I am not sure if they are just looking to dump their current Canon stuff for new stuff or what.

Also, I have seen JVC. Are these any good?

My friend has a Canon Vixia HFS100 and it's a fine camera as far a consumer grade camcorder is concerned.

Your requirement to take 5-6 microphones is a bit of a stretch though. Your going to have to get some sort of adapter/amplifier/mixer to interface multiple microphones with your camcorder since most of the consumer grade stuff only has one mic input, if any at all.

I've had a Canon Vixia HF M30 for a couple months and couldn't be happier... Ran me about $400.

Here's a video of my 9 year old snowboarding last saturday... Not sure how to embed here though.
