The monitor on my laptop does not display colors the correct way which makes photoshopping (color correction and white balance mostly) very difficult. I pretty much have to guess on what adjustments to make on my photos and even then they still look crappy on my screen.  I have a built in program that adjusts color and gamma somewhat but it still doesn't look right. Is there a program out there that can help me out, or would I have better luck with a new computer and monitor?

Yeah, monitor calibration is a must for getting accurate colors, and using the "standard" program that comes with most PC's can certainly be an exercise in frustration.  Your best bet is to get one of the calibration tools such as the  Spyder 3 PRO by Datacolor or the i1Display 2 by X-Rite.  I have an older Spyder 2 version, and it has provided me with very consistent results for a few years, now.  However, the i1Display is a very popular device, and is known to have very good customer support.  I would probably give it the edge, if shopping for a new device today.

I realize it is an expensive tool, but a monitor is something that needs to be calibrated on a regular basis (I calibrate mine once/month)  if you really get serious about photography.  The colors on a monitor shift over time, and that seems to be especially true for laptop computers.

But if budget is an issue, don't give up on your "built-in" calibration program, yet.  I have been able to get the colors on a laptop computer monitor pretty darn close, using it.  It just took a lot of tries.
