The consensus of my coworkers (large photo club at work) is that doing it yourself is a very time consuming process where most feel it is not worth their time and effort.  Instead, pay to have it done.

I use an Epson 3170 that scans 4 35mm slides or negs at once. I use Photoshop CS3 to scan them at 4000 dpi, then clean them up. I run a script to save a copy as a down sampled JPEG, burn them to DVD and I'm done. I always scan at high res because I don't want to have to re-scan. The flat bed scanner is a compromise, but I still get better results than what I used to get from a dedicated Polaroid scanner I have.
