Been a long time since I wanted/needed a new camera but it is time. I used to do a lot of SLR work and had my own darkroom. I resisted digital for a long time and finally broke down and got a Olympus C-5060 5 Mega pixel camera that has served me well for the last 8-10 years now.

Yesterday I took a long overdue hike in the woods and wished I had a camera with me. I'd like something with hi mega pixel, macro feature amd is extremely backpack friendly.

What say ARFCOM?

Wtih your background, ..... DSLR go with what feels the best I would stay with Canon or Nikon. Lot of fan boys each way. Both will produce great pictures. What is your Budget?

I'd love to say Yashikamat 124G but you would have to break out your darkroom equipment. Anyway digital cameras change as fast as computers which it really painful if you invest much money in it.  I have always liked Nikons until we got to the digital era now I think their high end stuff is really nice and the low end stuff seems not much different than all the other brands. Start with what might make it do something that other camera might not. One thing to consider is do you need a waterproof or water resistant model Ive had family members drop electronic gadgets in water before so I bought the wife a FUJI waterproof digital camera for her cruise.  Consider how much zoom you really need some things like wildlife you have to have lots of zoom.  Consider what you will do with the image for the web you dont need high resolution for a large print you have to have high resolution.  Compare the feel of the controls and see what feels right to you. There is not one best choice but there is one out there that you will like better if you compare and do your homework looking at what others said about it on sites like best buy etc where you can read customer reviews.

Budget isn't as important as lense, relaiability, durability and SIZE as I said, I'm looking for a backpacking camera. But I think I'd like to stay under $500.

You can budget a nice macro lens for $500.00
to get camera and general lens plus a macro will cost you $1500 or so to
get something nice.

I see older canon rebel bodies for $200.00 or so and you can pickup al older EOS lens for $150-250.

Just some clairity, I am NOT looking for a digital SLR  I want something compact and light. I am hovering on a Canon SX 210 and would love to find one locally but that isn't looking too promising. I'm leaving for Vegas Thursday and MIGHT see if I can pick one up when I get off the plane.

Thanks for your help!

Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX3. It's basically a rebadged Leica D-LUX 4.  As far a P&S, this is the one I'd get. I shoot dSLR (Canon 5D Mark II and 7D).

The Micro Four-Thirds like the Olympus EP2 looks great. But it's way too pricey. It's an inbetween camera slotted between P&S and full dSLR. As far as portability and discreetness, the micro four-thirds system is almost like the Leica M-series rangefinders, but obviously not as expensive.

I really think you should look into the G11...

For P&S the Panasonics have a great bang for the buck going on.  Image quality is really nice on their Cameras.

If you want something a little more rugged, try a Canon D10, what my wife carries now after her Panasonic died (unfortunate water accident).  Really nice to have a camera that is waterproof to 33 feet.

I don't know about Panasonic cameras in general, but the LX3 I recommended is the exact same hardware as the Leica D-LUX . The only difference is the branding (Panasonic logo vs Leica logo) and the software/firmware.

That said, the LX3 has a very fast f/2.0 to f/2.8 maximum aperture lens with a focal range of 5.1-12.8mm which in 35mm SLR terms is 24-60mm. So it has a decent wide-angle range to a fairly normal perspective 'telephoto' end. This is probably it's one weak spot (60mm effective focal max). So if you want something with a bit more reach, the Canon G11 would be better (28-140mm focal range; 35mm equivalent). But the Canon G11 lens is f/2.8-f/4.5.
