I need to upgrade my daughters PS3 we got her the 20gb version. I know but it was when people were camping outside in the winter for it and I was able to snag it for her.

What I need to know is which exact model 250gb drive to buy with the 1.5 bit transfer rate I think it is and if we do this upgrade will we be backwards capable?

I'm pretty sure any 2.5" SATA drive will work. Should tell you the requirements and how to do the install in your owners manual.

Backwards compatibility has nothing to do with the HD and everything to do with the laser and system internals. I have a 40gig. It isn't backwards compatible with PS2 games and never will be, even should I replace the HD.

Yep any 2.5" SATA will do, stick with a 5400rpm drive, 7200 wont see any real performance gains but will increase the heat. I upgraded to a 320gig WD.

It's really easy to do. Just make sure you use the right size screwdriver for the screws, they strip easily.

And, the PS3 can only take advantage of SATA 1.5.  Buying a sata 3.0 will work, but you won't see any performance gains...
