| Back in the day Microsoft produced the Close Combat series of pc games with "The Russian Front" being the best of the series. My question is what modern game has the same play to it. Looking for something that will play on newer computers? |

I'm gonna have to go ahead and disagree with you there, yeah. "Close Combat 2: A Bridge too far" was the best of the series. I have found nothing that has had the same "feel" and realism of the Close Combat series. I will say, however, that the "Company of Heroes" games have been similar and pretty dang fun, although slightly less realistic (Units never run out of ammo, no real psychological effects on morale) |

Man, I loved those games, although they could have been more difficult. The AI would always move towards the objectives and even if you were the attacking side, all you had to do was set up a tight defense, let the AI chew itself up on your defenses, and then move out from your positions to take the objectives. Much more fun on multiplayer.
There was a Normandy one after the Russian Front that was really fun. If I remember correctly, most of the team from Clsoe Combat went on to make the Brothers In Arms series of games. |

I used to have CCII: A Bridge Too Far, CCIII: THe Russian Front, CCIV: The Battle of the Bulge, and CCV: Invasion Normandy.
Of the series, I had the most fun with II and III. The Battle of the Bulge I wanted to like, as the strategic map system was far improved but the tactical AI was abysmal. Playing as the United States it was almost impossible, as the Germans would never attack, ever. You had to go root them out (and their battle groups were far more powerful than yours) or you had to sit and wait for the time to expire. CCII had the best sound, by far. Infantry had unbelievable staying power. You often had to go hand to hand to root folks out of positions.

Apparently Matrix Games is still putting out Close Combat games.
There's two on here that I haven't seen, Wacht am Rhein and The Longest Day. Has anybody tried them? I'm tempted. |

I logged most my time in the Normandy game which I think was the 5th one. I played all of them except the first one and I like the campaign element and the strategical turn base movement that they started doing in the 4th one. I don't remember that being in the Russian front one, but I may be forgetting that. |

The Longest Day is a rebuild of Close Combat Invasion Normandy, and Wact am Rhein is a rebuild of Close Combat: Battle of Bulge. HOWEVER - if you liked the originals then you will LOVE these. More units, more weapons, Vista compatible, better AI, updated graphics, and new maps and campaigns. I enjoy them. Av. |

If I already have the original versions of both of those games, is it worth plunking down $50ea. to get the new versions? |

Also, go to the close combat fan sites, there are an amazing amount of new mod's for close combat 4 and 5. More replayability for free, than dropping 50$ for the same game you bought 10 years ago. |
