I realize this is a "War Gaming" section, but there is a lot of experience here with gaming systems, so I thought I'd ask about Nintendo DS's.  My kids all want a DS for Christmas/birthdays this year, and are ages 10 and 12.

I am curious what anyone's experence here has been with these, or their kids who may have one.

-DS vs DS Lite?  Much difference here?

-DS vs. PSP?  Would they enjoy one over the other?  Options? Price?

-Any good deals on the interweb on DS?  Seems that they are solid at 130 bucks around here.  Any fears on used ones, say from Gamestop?

Any other thoughts are much appreciated.  Thanks.

my kid ended up with both a DS and a PSP,,the DS has been durable and a good value, buy the DS itself from bestbuy or somewere that offers a product replacment plan and get that.
it was well worth it for somthing that gets knocked around in the car etc.

as far as games i would buy used, you can get large game lots from ebay for a good deal.
not many differences between the lite and the std except the lite seems to have more available accessories

the PSP  is more fragile and generally more expensive, games, movies etc. ,i think its more suited for older kids,i couldnt justify the cost if i had to pick.

Get the DS lite, it is much smaller, and the screens are much brighter and clearer compared to the old 'brick' DS.  The DS's can play GameBoy Advance games, so if they have those, another bonus.

I don't know as much about the PSP.  If you go that route, get the Slim model.  I think there is also another new version coming out that is smaller, better screens, etc.  PSP is kind of neat in that it has Wi-Fi for internet, can use sony memory sticks for movies and MP3's, etc.

There are more games on the DS, and especially for kids, you have the Nintendo catalog, so all kinds of kids stuff, plus lots of good games for adults.  DS has Wi-Fi for multiplayer games, but unless you get a special cartridge that can do homebrew apps, you can't really get one onto the internet, even with the 'official' Opera browser cartridge.  Well, you can get it on the net, but it's kind of like a cell phone going online, but....not as good.

I have a DS, and I rarely leave the house without it.  When you close the system, it instantly pauses the game.  I have a puzzle game I play, and it's great for when you're standing in line someplace.  Pull out the DS, and play a few rounds of whatever, and then snap the lid shut when your turn is up.  Sweetness.

And, yes, I have surfed arfcom lite on my DS!

DS lite is the way to go for that age. PSP's are more complex, have a limited game inventory for that age group, and break easily (ask me how I know ).

If you get one, pick up any of the advance wars games. Turned based rather cartoony graphics but an absolute blast!

Thanks for all the help guys.  DS Lite it is.

I guess I'll just have to pony up the 130 bucks as these don't seem to ever go down in price.
