Alright... I just got an early Christmas gift. It's Splinter Cell Double Agent. I only have a Radeon X700. The X700 doesn't have the Shader Technology that the game requires. Everything else is good to go on my system. Lets just say that I want another Radeon. The game only has been Tested with the Radeon X1600, X1800 and X1900 (But doesnt mean nothing else will work). Which one should I get? I saw Best Buy advertising the X1600 for $130.00 Bucks. Regards, Nathan ETA: I was just looking at Prices... Shit. It looks like I might be going with the X1600. Any Reviews on the card from anyone here? |

The x1600 is a turd, you need to go a little higher than that. You might try the Nvidia 7600GT, you can get one for around the price you quoted for the X1600 and it will run rings around it. I think it takes several models up into the X1800 range to compete w/ the 7600GT. May want to double check though, they may offer a specific X1800 model that performs on par and matches the price point, I can't keep up with all the new models. I am totally going off memory but last time I was shopping the x1800 GTO was close to the 7600GT in overall performance (each performs slight better in one game, slight worse in another, back and forth, about equal overall), but it was like $50 more. I ended up w/ the 7600GT. If you spend about a $100 more the 7900GT is a great semi-budget buy too... Definitely do not buy the x1600 for $130, especially if it's not the high end x1600XT (that still loses badly to a 7600GT). They also have Pro and other plain models that are slower still, etc and some of the lower end cards may be no faster than the x700 if memory serves. {EDIT} Quickly glancing around on Newegg.com, it appears the x1800GTOs have dropped down to match the 7600GTs pretty well on price if you catch a sale or a good rebate, still slightly higher but at least close. If you want ATI and want to say near $100 that looks pretty decent. However the x1900GT which is a newr offering looks very hard to beat for $150, doing some quick reading it looks like a great buy for the money if you want to spend the $150. The price on the x1900GTs is low due to the x1950Pros hitting to replace them (better but $75 more). Newegg also had a 7600GT with a fat rebate it on it for down around $80 after rebate, however the original purchase price on that model was high. The standard price on the 7600GTs on there is around the $110-$120 point like the X1800GTOs. Here's some links: x1900GT $150 www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814102022 x1800GTO $120 www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814102021 7600GT $80ish after a $65 rebate www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814143049 Like I said there are 7600GTs on there for $110ish if you don't like rebates, that ones original purchase price of $140 is pretty high... Do some more reading before buying, but since you already like ATI I'd jump on that x1900GT personally. |
| what slot do you have AGP pci EXpress or what. from ati's page you'll want MINIMUM of 1800 never gete the mimimum requirements for a game |

You might as well go all out and just get an NVIDIA 8800. They're the high-end right now, but you'd be well ahead of the pack for the next 2-3 years I'd think. I mean, they're REALLY good; the benchmarks say that one 8800 outperforms two 7900's in SLI mode, which is pretty intense. I think the cheapest one is $450; expensive, YES, but on the same hand, you would have the absolute BEST that is available right now. And it's a DirectX10 card...DirectX10 doesn't even come out till next year
