So I've been playing since last june when it came out, I've got a few servers I play on where my ping is always in the low 20s.  All of a sudden last weekend, my ping started jumping from the 20s to 200 or higher, making playing virtually impossible.  Anyone know why this crap is happening?  I'm not real computer savvy, but I've also noticed my Favorites on my toolbar stopped working, forcing me to answer the "send or don't send" to microsoft prompt from the error.  WTF.  I've ran a couple antispyware programs and they find stuff but clean it up.  Is there a correlation?  Do I need to reinstall the game or OS??  Any help would be appreciated.

have you reset your cable or dsl modem lately.  might give that a try.

my dsl has been problematic lately i've been getting kicked from bf2 servers.  and their really isn't much i can do about it.   as far as the isp is concerned.   As long as you are seeing web pages at a reasonable speed their job is done.   they could care less about your ping on a gaming server

Resetting your modem might help.  You can also try running a tracert.

Go to Start > Run> in the command line type: tracert www.google.com

You can substitute any website you want.  I just put google cuz it's easy.

Now the thing that you're going to see is a Black box pop up and it will look something like this:

1. 8ms        9ms           66.88.77.123
2. 19ms      21ms        66.761.13.76

Those numbers represent hops that your signal takes from your home to wherever that website is.
What you want to look for are symbols like this one --- >  *
Which means your signal is dropping off somewhere or there is a problem with that hub or node at that particular hop.  For example:

4.  7ms   *         66.88.77.123

or

4.  *       *           66.88.77.125

The numbers dont really matter.  I am just making them up to show you the example.  But again, the thing you want to look for is the * symbol.   That would be the culprit that is causing your high pings.  Also, you want to look for numbers that shoot up into the hundreds range.  For example:

2.  167       221      66.88.77.124

That would be an indication that one of the nodes or hubs is malfunctioning (possibly).

If you run tracert and see any of those problems call your ISP.  The only catch is they will probably say "well we dont own those hubs so anything outside of [insert your isp here] we aren't responsible."

The good news is at least you know there is a problem somewhere in the system and you can request a tech lacky out to test the lines and/or possible establish if your modem is the root of the problem.

Keep us posted!

Awesome, thanks for the info cruze and slurm!  I'll try 'em when I get home from work tonight.

I tried the tracert and no *s showed up.  When you all say "reset the modem", do you mean just pulling the power cable out of it, or is it more involved than that?  I pulled out the ac cable from the modem, and started up BF2 and still had the same issues.  Multiplayer is totally f'd, but single player is smooth as ever.. so at this point I have no idea but it's gotta be something to do with my internet connection.  Any other options?? thanks!

edit:  I tried the tracert again and noticed there were numbers from 7 and 8 all the way to 400 and 500.  I tried to capture the black screen but wasn't able too.  So, there is a bad hub??? I might try and contact the cable folks tomorrow but they aren't the most accomodating of people, if I can even get a real human on the phone.  thanks for the info though!

Single player will run fine because single player mode doesnt require you to play on a server.   pings in the range of 400-500 is WAY too high.  So you are saying the first time you ran the tracert the pings were fine then the second time it was high?  I'm a tad confused.  Yes, by resetting the modem we basically mean unplugging it and plugging it back in after about 15-20 seconds.

Do you have DSL or cable?
Are you running through a router?
What kind of modem do you have?
Who is your internet service provider (ISP)?
Are you running any type of firewall software?

From what it sounds I/we can do a better job at fixing your problem than your ISP.  Answer those questions and we can go from there.

i had the same problems and went round and round with my isp, i even told them the ip of the item that was giving the problem but they didn't care because in the end they don't guarantee latency, just speed.

this went on for a couple of months so i upgraded my service to the faster service which put me through different routers on their end.  then i switched back to my normal service but they still keep routing me through the "faster/less maxed out" routers, just lowering  my speed.  maybe i got lucky who knows, but things are still good.

i had the same probelem you did, i would have a ping of 20-50 and then the fucking thing would jump up to 600-1000ms.

good luck

First of all thanks for the effort!

1.  Cable
2.  No router
3.  There is no make/model on the actual modem
4.  Time/Warner cable--Roadrunner
5.  No firewall, just whatever windows XP is doing.

Some extra info that might be pertinent, I just recently have been having spyware issues I think.  I can't do any windows updates because apparently when I had my pc fixed, it was installed with an invalid code or something.  I'm a dumbass with all this, hope that helps!

did you have a regular store re-install xp for you or a buddy?  not being able to update xp usually means that you are running a pirated version.  this shouldn't have anything to do with your issue though.  what a/v, spyware software are you running?

How long ago did you have your PC fixed?

Did the problem start to occur soon after you got it fixed?

Theoretically, this shouldnt be the root of the problem though there could be an issue going on there with windows firewall.  My guess is this is a modem firmware issue or possible a faulty line.

Are you running a splitter from the cable outlet in the wall to your modem?

First off I need to know this....Did you change anything/do anything to your computer or modem recently.  Change any settings etc etc...??

Slurm and others, thanks again for the insight.  I got the pc fixed around december of '05.  No, the problem didn't start until last weekend, which is pissing me off since things were fine for months.  I am using a splitter actually from the cable line, it's a Y from the main line into the modem and a tv.  I'm too much of a dumbass to even begin to change settings on the modem etc....BUT, check this out, and you might find this helpful if I haven't already worn out the welcome....We got a letter in the mail yesterday from the cable/internet folks, stating "we have recieved reports of an unsolicited commercial bulkmail run that was issued by one of your computers due to a virus leaving your computer open to outside connections.  We need you to secure your services"....etc, etc.   I've been running anti spyware/malware all that stuff and can't seem to get rid of it all.  I've heard reinstalling the OS is all I can do, so I'm thinking I need to learn how to do that.   URRHGAH

you need to install a software firewall like zone alarm as it will ask you if it is ok for a program so send data out.  also what av, spyware are you using?  you also might want to try a program like dumeter that will show upload and download speeds, this is nice as it stays in your tray and has a couple of arrows, when they are red, no data transmission, when they are green data transmission, just another alert for you.  plus you can see how much data is being sent out in terms of speed and daily amounts.

I would definitely get new versions of Ad-Aware, Spybot and Ewido, then update them and run all of those to clean out your system. Then I'd get a copy of AVG anti-virus (Free) and run that, might as well run a Trend Micro Housecall scan too. On top of that, I'd download and install Hijack This and then post the log of what it reports. Then we can help you figure out the process that is causing you all of this headache. (If it is still there after running the other stuff)

Thanks for the links Dizza!  I ran all the programs you suggested and discoverd the smitfraud virus and Tibs.vq, whatever that turd is.  Every time I would turn the computer on this crap would reload itself, which was the problem the whole time.  I googled the  spysherrif/smitfraud, and found a program specifically designed to get rid of it, and it worked!  My computer is back to normal, running great.  Thanks for all the help all of ya!  I think I learned more about computers in the last few days than I have the past few years.  I played BF2 last night and everything is smooth as usual online.  I ran the tracert and there were no hiccups* whatsoever.  woot

Well as of last night I was playing the USI mod for Battlecrap2 hoping in some small it would be void of the BS that occurs on ranked servers.  Boy was I WRONG !I dont think I can stomach BF2 in any flavor anymore

I am hoping the Insurgency mod for HL-2 will come out this summer.  Until then I'm not sure what I will do besides looking at porn on the internet.

Got any ideas?
