Anybody else into horror games? I love them, but I have such a vivid imagination they'll creep me out for days after

One of the first that I ever played was the They Hunger mod for Half Life. I never legitimately finished it, but wow it was messed up and creepy.

Some of my favorites:

Dead Space 1 & 2 (I can't remember if I ever played 3)
Alien: Isolation (haven't finished yet, just reached the alien for the first time)
Outlast
Condemned
Among the Sleep (unique game, pretty short, ending might piss you off )
Alan Wake (cheesy and overly dramatic, but fun)
Bioshock (yes, I'll call it horror)
Metro 2033 and Last Light (yes, also horror)

Have but haven't gotten to yet:

Penumbra
FEAR series

I just finished SOMA last night. Now that is a fantastic horror game, because it's not constant terror... there's a lot of exploration and some puzzle solving, and the story is excellent, especially if you put some effort into exploring. They put some incredible detail into it, and all the controls feel very natural. It also LOOKS really, really good, even on my older rigs. Well worth a play.

I'm sure there are more that I've forgotten about. Discuss

Silent Hill series.  (I like SH3 the best.  Could not get into later ones)

Resident Evil.  I will have to pick up RE7 when its on sale.  The older ones are classics in survival horror IMO.

There are a few Call of Cthulhu games.  There is supposed to be a new one coming out on new consoles.

I liked several on your list (Alien Isolation, Bioshock, Alan Wake, Dead Space).

I also liked the original Resident Evil games (1-3) and also plan to get 7 once it goes on sale.

And while they don't fit the pure horror genre to a T (they are more action than horror), I also liked the Dead Rising series, the Dead Island games as well as Dying Light, and the Left 4 Dead series. And if we include Bioshock, does that also include System Shock?

A game called D on sega dream cast was my first ever scary game. Then it was resident evil and silent hill ect. ect. Silent hill was epic. I was blitzed 90% of the time playing it. The darkness and the ambient noise messed with you even when sober.

I'm not  huge on horror games, I nope right the fuck out of most of them. Last one I played that I really love was FEAR, phenomenal especially for the time.

A new game called Hunt: Showdown probably isn't an exact fit for this thread but it looks like it's a pretty original idea for a multiplayer shooter. It's essentially PvPvPvE as you play in one of three teams of two hunters in a 1900s bayou. The objective is to hunt the demons infesting whichever swamp you happen to be in and claim the bounty then exfil without getting your bounty stolen by the other teams. Sounds pretty meh but the visuals and art design definitely have a unique horror design to them. Here's some actual gameplay from regular dudes that the used at e3 (none of the cringe worthy division or anthem scripted gameplay bullshit).

As a rule, I don't.

I have played some in the past that were so fucked up, I just couldn't make it through them. I just don't recall names. They were on ps3 though.

I did buy the last two Alien games for ps3. I didn't like the run and hide aspect of Alien Isolation and quickly lost interest. I did like the one before that though, where you got to blow aliens to hell. Alien Colonial Marines was good, though short.

I would much rather watch a horror movie that play a horror game.

I could have sworn I put that in the OP.

I haven't finished it yet. Or Machine for Pigs

I'm working through Far Cry 2 for the second time right now... it might as well be a horror game it's so brutal

Get a new mission... hey, it's only halfway across the map, what could go wrong? Hop in a car and start driving, pass through a checkpoint and 5 guys open up on me with AKs. Keep driving. Hear a truck start chasing after me. Mounted machine gun on the technical damages my car which is now smoking. Oh well, it still runs, I'll keep driving. Forget which way I need to turn at the next crossroad, pull up map, swerve off the road while looking at map and hit a tree. Car won't move. Get out, run behind tree because technical is trying to run me over. Shoot the gunner out of the car and get hit by the driver who jumped out shooting. Heal, steal their car. Immediately smoking because the gunfire attracted shooters and technicals from the next checkpoint. Jump into gunner position, shoot gunner and driver out of the new technical. Shoot enemies on foot. Health is low, have to get out to heal. Enemy truck explodes, surrounding grass is now on fire. Get shot by sniper I can't see. Burning grass catches me on fire. Run away from grass.  Put out fire. Health is almost zero. Try to heal. Pull out malaria pills instead. Get headshotted and die.

All I wanted to do was drive halfway across the map

I never got into the Resident Evils... I wanted to like 4 but the controls were so weird I gave up.

The first Dead Rising was great! My only complaint was the stupid mission timers, if it had been a strictly open world, go at your own pace game it would have been one of my all time favorites. I never got around to the others as I believe they're console exclusives and I'm all PC.

And yes, System Shock definitely counts, probably even more so than Bioshock. Unfortunately it's another that I never finished... I got partway into it though. It's creepy but I got a bit annoyed at it

I really enjoy horror games that mess with your head.

One of my favorites of all-time was Eternal Darkness - Sanity's Requiem on Gamecube.  I like the style they took, toying with the in-game characters' minds, and breaking the fourth wall by making the players question what's real and what's not.

I get annoyed with jump scares.  In moderation, they're fantastic and really add to the mood of the game, but after a while they become boring and predictable.

Several games are predictable enough that I'm able to guess almost exactly when something is going to happen. I'll be wandering along and see the design of the room I'm in and say out loud "Gee, I wonder if something is going to jump out a- HAH, there it is!"

SOMA really messed with me in that regard because I think I was right once during the entire game. That was more unnerving than something actually happening

The Dead Island games were great I thought but not truly horror. I think Dying Light entered the horror genre for sure by taking it a step further and introducing the night-specific gameplay. The hunters that come out at night are terrifying, especially the first time you see them and when they come out of nowhere. I'd really like to find some good horror games for Xbox 1.

It was released almost 3 years ago, but The Evil Within is pretty good. I picked it up awhile back when Xbox had a deal going on for $10 I believe (not sure what it is now). With The Evil Within 2 coming out this fall, it might be a good one. I played a little over the weekend, and there sure are some spots to get your heart racing. Definitely worth looking into.

Hmmmm... I am intrigued. I LOVED CoC: Dark Corners of the Earth

Grew up on the RE series. I'm happy they're bringing Resident Evil back to its roots. I'm pretty excited for the RE2 remake.

I know it's cliched; but Silent Hill 2 is definitely one of my all time favorites. It also has the best soundtrack from anything ever. I still need to play 3 >.>

The only recents I played that I really like was the evil within and until dawn. Until dawn had some decent actors in it that I actually recognized their faces from the game and it was a pretty interesting story with equally interesting gameplay.

Didnt take that long to beat but I really liked it.

The evil within.

I thought it was a better horror game then Resident Evil.

Here's the trailer for The evil within 2
