Can anyone recommend a single player space sim?

I loved the old tie fighter and x wing back in the day.  Also enjoyed the wing commander series.

I looked at the X: series on steam but was not sure with its low meta critic score.

Suggestions?

Yes, I am aware of star citizen but it's a long way away.

Those just got re-released. They're still some of the best out there.

You can play the Star Citizen alpha right now. Elite: Dangerous full release is Dec 16th.

Look into X3:Albion Prelude. The X you probably looked at was Rebirth. EgoSoft has a bad habit of releasing buggy games, but over time they'll get patched up and their games has a very strong modding community.

Plus obligatory plug for Star Citizen.

Elite is not EVE. Only EVE spinoff released was Dust 514. There is an EVE pew pew fighter game, but Elite is not it. Elite does seem pretty hardcore.

Extremely addictive, but you can burn out if you don't know what you are doing. If you don't learn fuel management it gets hard to get anywhere, at least that's what I've experienced. So many times I get into orbit with no retro-burn fuel, or certainly not enough to maneuver or break orbit.

Don't even think about buying X: Rebirth. It got crushed on the reviews for a reason.

The rest of the X series is a great space sim, but not your game if you want a combat sim. X is all about building up and managing your trading empire so you can eventually afford that destroyer and escort fleet and even then there are sectors full of enemies who will gladly hand your ass to you and cost you millions of credits in damage. I love the series but to do well in the game requires a lot of effort building up your empire. Your starting ship will easily get smoked by enemies. X3 Albion Prelude was the most recent game from that developer that is worth your time. X3 Reunion and Terran Conflict are good games too.

If you want a good combat sim check out Descent: Freespace, and Freespace 2. They are both on Steam I believe, or GOG should have them. There's a mod to port the original game over the FS2 engine. The freespace2 open source project should have what you need to get that running. The campaign of both of those games has a really good story, great atmosphere, and the combat is good. If you liked TIE Fighter you will probably like Freespace.

Honestly, the X-Wing and Tie Fighter games (recently re-released on GOG) are still the best space sims out there.  The graphics may be a tad blocky, but not by much, and I've never been more immersed in a game than I have those two.

Here's hoping they can get XWing Alliance up so I can buy it again and get the graphics upgrade.
