I have a Radeon 7850 in my computer, and I've been thinking about adding a second card.  I was hoping that may particular model (MSI R7850 2GB) would stay in production/in stock longer, but unfortunately it has been discontinued, and the places that still have it in stock want $200 or more for it (I paid 200 for mine a year ago, open box - that shit oughta be cheaper).

So my questions are: are there any compatibility issues with using cards from different manufacturers in a Crossfire setup?

More importantly, are there any issues with different amounts of memory on the two cards?  I know that if I put a card running at 860 MHz with one running at 900MHz, they'll both be set to the speed of the slower card, and the same goes for the memory speed.  But what about the amount - if I put a 1GB and a 2GB card together, will the system have 3 GB of video memory, or will the 2GB card have the amount of memory hobbled in the same way the speed will be?

I'm reasonably sure that the answer is '3GB' but I want to make sure before committing to anything.

You want to use identical cards and make sure your power supply is well above the minimum recommended.
