What did they say about backwards compatibility, games booting from disc vs. mandatory installation, online all the time or not? MSRP? No backwards compatibility, console itself is not online all the time (though game devs can choose to release mandatory online games), mandatory installation before play. I missed the presentation, but from what I'm reading online it appears that they are also restricting used games? Sounds like the game will be permanently connected to your online account, and to hook it up to a second account you will have to pay a fee. So like an online pass I suppose, only I think this would apply to the whole game and not just the online portion. That's actually unsurprising, and since steam already does something like this I don't think it's that big of a deal. Wonder how gamestop et al. is taking it though. |

Looks excellent. I will likely be purchasing it in 2014 after I'm sure there are no reliability issues. The presentation was well worth the time to watch it. Seriously? http://www.neogaf.net/forum/showthread.php?t=560500 |

While I'm not looking to replace my 360 nor my PS3 anytime soon, today's 'reveal' of the new XBox did not enhance my opinion of it at all. I mean, they took some of the biggest concerns of the next gen, and made them into Features?!
I feel that some form of BC is desirable, although I rarely use it. They'll probably do the Sony deal of having old games ported through emulation, and charge $10 for 10-20 year old games that the player has already owned....which is BS in my opinion, but at least an option. Online all the time is a bit of a sticking point. there is absolutely no reason why I should need an internet connection to play an offline game. Many games have proven how that model can be tricky. The big one for me is the blocking of used/rented games. I rent games a lot as a form of extended trials, and buy a lot of games used. Now, I will also say, as an avid gamer across all platforms, I buy games on launch day and/or new more often than I should. |

No backward compatibility kills it for me. That reeks of "rebuy" to me. Uh neither Microsoft or Sony are supporting BC on their next gen consoles. Too much hassle for minimal payback. That is the way thing are. Quoted:
Not really impressed. The used game fee killed it for me along with the redesigned controller. The 360 controller was perfect, they should have left it along. The used game fee is up in the air. I'm sure we will have more clarification in 19 days at E3. And are you really going to judge a controller before you have even held/gamed with it? Pretty stupid mentality to have. Quoted:

I enjoyed it---they showed off the capabilities and will unveil more at E3. |

I read a tweet earlier about games requiring a mandatory install on the console's HDD, which doesn't bother me, but what does bother me is that second hand games apparently require some kind of license or code to play that you have to buy from MS. I understand a lot is speculation right now and we're a bit aways from this thing hitting the streets, but at first glance I am not a fan of this. I bought the console, I bought the game, who are they to tell me that the combination of me owning the console and the game is not good enough to play it? I'm looking at my 360 collection now, and about half of it is used games I picked up on the cheap. I've got no problem paying full price for good games, I've got no problem buying games overall, I do feel it's pretty silly to require a license with a second hand game. I don't think Nintendo does this with the WiiU, and I don't think Sony has any plans for it with the PS4. The presentation was kinda meh overall to me, lots of smoke and mirrors, pretty FMVs, no game play, eight core processor with no mention of speeds which is a useless spec, 8 gigs of RAM which I felt is a knee-jerk reaction to Sony saying that the PS4 has eight gigs of RAM. I dunno, I'm kinda torn on it. I can't say yes or no until we get closer to launch and see some actual gameplays off this thing and how certain things work. |

More information. Not sure how I feel about this but we don't have the full story yet.

However, Microsoft executive Phil Harrison, in an interview with Kotaku, has some potentially bad news. The aforementioned 'fee' to play games on a second account? Full MSRP. So unless you want to use your account for your entire family, you'll be dishing out an extra $40, $50, $60 for siblings or friends to try out new games. Harrison did tell Kotaku that his company plans to allow gamers to 'trade' their used games online somehow - though declined to get into further details

It gets even better!!!
Official xbox Q&A Q: Does Xbox One require an “always on” Internet connection? A: No, it does not have to be always connected, but Xbox One does require a connection to the Internet. According to Harrison, it has to check in online every 24 hours. So yeah, no internet? Tough shit, you aren't going to be able to use it. With all respect to all y'all who scoffed when some of us said an internet connection would be required and you all swore that MS would never do that, well, we told you so.

Well, not to let facts get in the way, but from news.xbox.com We are also designing it so you can play games and watch Blu-ray movies and live TV if you lose your connection.
So, there's that. It's NOT an always online console. Those who watched the Reveal should have noticed several functions that required internet connectivity, such as Skype and Internet searching. There's still clarification to come from Microsoft as well. |

There's still clarification to come from Microsoft as well. So you can play without it being online. For how long? The thing is that it's not going to require always online, but it checks in every 24 hours. That's straight from Microsoft's VP. So you must have an internet connection, at least once a day. The net effect is still the same whether it's "always online" or "online once every 24 hrs" - those without an internet connection can't use it. ETA: here's the exact comments, when they finally boiled down past all the bullshit and marketing smoke: Kotaku: If I’m playing a single player game, do I have to be online at least once per hour or something like that? Or can I go weeks and weeks? Harrison: I believe it’s 24 hours. Kotaku: I’d have to connect online once every day. Harrison: Correct. |

Harrison also said that what they meant by "no always connected to internet required" was that you didn't need to have it connected except for whenever you first install a game and the mandatory daily check ins to avoid consequences he didn't want to talk about. |
|
I rent games to make sure that the game doesn't suck before I buy them. With this abortion, it costs you MSRP to find out a game sucks. THEN you might as well throw the game away because if you were able to sell it, the new owner would have to pay MSRP to find out it sucks.
No way am I playing THAT game. What if you want to throw your game console into your RV and go camping for a week? NOPE! Man I am disappoint. |

Which is basically the same thing when you look at the practical effect it has. The problem with always online is that those without an internet connection you can't use it. The problem with once-a-day-online, or even once a week if they change it to something more like that, is that without an internet connection you can't use it. It's a distinction without a difference. On deployment to some tiny FOB in bumfuckistan with a nonexistant internet connection? Tough luck. The one-time connection idea for a newly installed game doesn't bother me. Steam does the same thing. The difference here is that once the game is installed with steam, you can turn on steam's offline mode and you could theoretically never go online again and still be able to play that game to your heart's content. The xbox 1 won't allow you to do that. |

Interdasting. It looks bigger than it actually is, probably because of the blockiness factor. Of course, Mr. Mandatory Kinect Jr. will have to go somewhere too, so the comparison is a bit misleading. |

I've made up my mind:
High definition Infared camera with high intensity mics that can listen to my heart beat = fail Shitty always on = fail I could careless about used games because you can always find older titles on amazon on the cheap. Graphics in presentation still looked like shit = fail So I guess when my Xbox live subscription ends ill be trading all my hardware In for a PS Vita because all my gamestops don't carry anything for PC and they'll be soon closing in the next couple years unless they start catering to PC. As of 11-18-13 ill officially be a PC gamer. The sad thing is dumbass kids all across America will succumb to all the hype and the console will survive yet all the gamers my age which are the majority will be forced into PC and PS4. |
|
Looks like the old shitty VCR in my dads garage |
|
Tech Spec PS4 and Xbox1
Fuck M$ and their no backwards compatible, always online, not being able to share games, have to DL every game to HD bull shit. I'm just gonna build a tower instead... |

Damn... it just keeps getting worse.
Just saw that the HDD will not be user replaceable. So guess what. You've got 500GB. Thats it! Every single game you play has to be installed to play it. That + TV stuff like DVR and such will quickly fill up that 500GB. Also just found out that kinect can see in the dark like night vision. NO HIDING FROM BIG BROTHER NOW, BABY!
If this is the direction the game industry is going then I will quickly be dropping out of gaming. I'm sure there are many others just like me. |
i guess ill dust my electrical tape off and cover big brother.
