I need to reformat my HD and am wondering how will it will affect my STEAM account
Currently I have installed on my computer:
COD Black Ops
COD MW2
BFBC2
Left 4 Dead
Obviously I will have to reinstall these after I reformat.

Can / Should I install Steam before I reinstall the games?  What I'm afraid of is that when I go to do what my computer thinks is  a fresh install  the games will require a Steam account and prompt me to install Steam but I won't be able to reuse my current account / username.
Can I use my current username and password?  If so what is the easiest way of going about this?

Also does DMR affect me anyway in this situation I have heard that some games won't let you install them multiple times?

Copy your saved games on to a flash drive.

Do what you ahve to do.

Download Steam and install; it then should let you download your games and reinstall them. Get your saved games from flash drive and party on.

Steam should not, unless you have reinstalled games 4 times give you any issues.

Just to say it; Steam sucks! There I had to say it.

And what is the problem with Steam?  I happen to love it.

I've had issues in the past with them, but my current experience with them has been very good.

I can understand some animosity towards them.

steam has gotten better, i had trouble getting the backup install to work for saved games.  they make it more complicated than it should be. so cant help you there.    so other than custom content like maps skins. mods,  all your games are redownloadable, some of them may have a limit depending on if its a valve game or another publisher. as long as you remember your password and email your account is your account, thats in the cloud.    for the reinstall of custom files and saves i suggest learning that before you do format. i did it after and still cannot get it to work.  so not been playing some of my games .. starting over sucks for some of them.  left4 dead will not be a issue. dunno about the others.

You guys are being waaaaay too complicated.  All you have to do is copy your Steam folder and the saved game folders (they vary by game).  Once you've reformatted and reinstalled your OS, just move the folder back onto the drive and reinstall Steam right over it.  When you install the game through Steam, it will restore any missing registry entries and will detect the content that's already on your drive so you won't have to download twice.

I've never had a problem, and I use it regularly.

Just copy your game saves/profiles like you would for any PC game. Put them on your storage drive, USB drive, or CD/DVD. The game save location varies from game to game. Check your documents. Back in the day they saved them in the games folder so it was easy to find. Apparently that was too hard for people, so now it is scattered all over My Documents. Yes, you'll have to do some looking. I am not sure why new games don't just save the profiles to their folders.

If these are game bought via steam you will need to reinstall steam in order to install the game.

What I recommend you do is backup the game files in steam, this way you don't need to redownload everything once your computer is up and running again.

I would give you the steps on how to backup(I think if you right click on the game in the library the option comes up) but I just formatted my computer and reinstalled windows and I haven't reinstall steam yet.
