Been lifting 3-5 days a week, 2-3 hours per day, for about six weeks, with a few missed sessions here and there.  My routine borders on overtraining, but I watch my gains carefully (have gained weight and strength and my lifts have been going up daily, if not weekly).  I get 8-10 hrs sleep per night and eat 4000+ clean cals a day.

I'm going on vacation for 8 days.  I'm thinking of finding a gym where I may lift two or three times during that time.  Or I could just take a break flat-out and sit around and do nothing.

Any recommendations?

Go crazy the week before your vacation, then take a break. I'd cut calories down to something a bit more modest during the break.

Where are you going on vacation?  If its some place with a beach, you could always do some sort of beach workout and shock your body some.

I wouldn't take a COMPLETE break, but switching to some bodyweight exercises and whatever the hotel gym has wouldn't hurt.  Pushups, situps, air squats, etc...  I have a set of resistance bands that connect to a door frame that can also provide a compact traveling workout kit.  But it's a vacation, enjoy it, just work out enough that you won't feel like a complete bum.

A week off wouldn't be a bad idea.

Different tissues heal at different rates.

IMO, exclusively lifting (esp. 3-5x weekly, 2-3 hours per) requires breaks.  I also haven't found "shocking" the body to be very helpful in developing strength or breaking strength plateaus.   Just veg.

If you are bordering on over-training, taking a week off is probably a good idea.  This will give the body time to heal.

Something else that will promote recovery by getting blood to flow through your muscles is getting a massage.  Since you're on vacation, you should think about doing this.  Of course, if you are going with a lady friend, see if you can get one from her every day.  Have fun with that

You do a lot of lifting what about some cardio to give your muscles a rest and strengthen the heart.
