So I think I gave myself a hernia last night...  Lower abdomen is store and there seems to be a bit of a bulge there (can't seem to get rid of that last bit o' fat there, so hard to tell 100%) that kinda sends a shooting pain down to my nuts when I poke it.   Have a Dr. appointment later on today.

Last night was squats/mil press/deads/hanging leg raises (middle day of Madcow/Starr 5x5), and I think I might have done it during the mil press, actually.   Some backstory, I used to be more or less morbidly obese, finally wised up and got real skinny.    7 years later, skin hadn't tightened up so I got an abdominoplasty last August.   In addition to cutting out the skin, they also usually tighten up the ab muscles.   My Dr said he only needed to do it "a little bit" as I had pretty well developed abs, but not sure if he went a bit overboard, as I could definitely tell.     Flexibility bending backwards definitely went down - when I first got it done, could really feel the abs pulling even when bending a bit back from normal upright position.   A bit better now, but flexibility still isn't there.   Early this year I had about enough of being skinny, and figured I'd try for strong.

Anyway, doing mil presses last night and I kinda felt it.   Not really a core exercise, I suppose, but  when the weight is all the way up, I definitely feel the aforementioned tension there and perhaps it was too much.    Continued on with the deads and then leg raises, which obviously target that area much more, which was probably a mistake.

So... assuming I'm correct, how long am I out for?   My understanding is that they basically embed some sort of mesh to repair the tear and one can start light exercise in a few weeks, but I don't know if my previous "work" makes me more prone to this and would negatively impact recovery vs. a "normal" person.

If they can do it laproscopically, you'll be good to go in 2 weeks!

Yes and have it done for the whole area, that way it wont happen on the other side. Thats how mine was done. Good Luck!

PCP wasn't sure, as the area where I feel there is a slight bulge has other scar tissue in the area from the abdominoplasty (still need to call the plastic surgeon to see whether he says that makes me more susceptible to hernias).    The bulge is more on the hard side, and I'd imagine that intestine poking out would be softer... so maybe the pain is just a pull and that is a bit of swelling.   Have an appointment with a general surgeon next Thursday...

When mine happened the intestine was firm, but still pliable. I just wasnt able to push/massage it back inside. I knew I was screwed then. And as a side note, if indeed that was intestine poking through you would not be in any condition to be typing here to ask about it.

I tore everything when it happened, scrotum dropped, torn abdomen, strangulated intestine. I shuffled my feet to get to where I needed to get to for at least 2 weeks after the surgery, and picking anything up that was heavier than a magazine was rather difficult.

Definitely a good idea to have the GS take a look. Its not to say that you may not have a tear and it just hasnt burst all the way through yet. *this happens alot to people, it just keeps scarring over, until finally one day the simplest of tasks will open it up*

there are two types of hernias:

strangulated

and

not strangulated

the former is relatively painless, the tissue poking through the ABD wall has circulation, see a doc, but not a emergency. many folks go years with undiagnosed hernias.

the later is when the tissue looses circulation due to the compression of the ABD muscles on ether side, this is usually very painful and requires immediate medical attention.

the reason i bring this up is the former can become the later just keep an eye on it.

they do it lap and you will be back in the gym in 2 weeks,  heavy weights in 4-6.
