Can anybody recommend an elliptical in the $1-2K range that would be worth owning?

Looking around on the web, I have seen a lot of praise for the Sole E35.

you might want to look into the Spirit brand name which builds the machines for Sole.  The advantage is that the Spirit line is usually sold by specialty shops meaning you can probably get it at a better price and have aftermarket support should you need parts.

Get a rower!

Sorry, I just got a Concept 2 Model D and I love it.

Edited to add...a Concept 2 Model D is $890 shipped to your door from www.concept.com.  A PM4 Model E will cost you about $400 more (allows you to do more things like race people over the internet).  Less than what even a used Precor elliptical runs.

It's THE standard as far as rowers go, and can stand up to years of abuse (they use them at health clubs).  Rowing, like an elliptical, is a low impact cardio workout but it also is a decent full body resistance workout as well...much better than anything you'll get from an elliptical.

I second the recommendation to get a rower instead.

Use to sell the concept 2's.  From the days of the model C to now they are still the best value in terms of a kick ass machine that will last longer than you will.  The trouble that most people stated that they had was that the workout was too intense.  It was the last american made machine that we had...shame
