I have been strength training by lifting iron for the last 15 weeks, and I am getting much stronger, but my flexibility is poor. The stronger I get the more inflexible I feel.

What should I do to help my overall flexibility?

Thanks!

Full range of motion in all your lifts will promote flexibility.  What are your workouts?  Do you do many warm-up sets?

The trainer is big on full range of motion, but it still seems esp on the day after I lift that I don't have any flexibility. He varies every workout with machines, iron, etc. Some days are pyramid sets, mostly a set of 20-15-10 increasing weight. I warm up on a treadmill, but dont really do any warmup on weights.

Most of my issue seems to be lower body. My arms and shoulders dont have the problem.

You have to define your lack of flexibility. ie... are you having trouble tying your shoes or are you disappointed that you can't do van-damme-esque full splits suspended between two chairs?

Warm up with weights, and relatively heavy ones at that. Running on a treadmill has zero utility in preparing you for your lifts.

I highly recommend the Magnificent Mobility DVD

Its more of the "cant bend down and touch my toes" issue vs flying scissorkicks into splits. Ill look into that DVD.
Thanks.

It may be that you've just never had a lot of flexibility, but really getting into training has shown you the need for it.

Does he have you do full squats or any deadlift variations?  Those tend to open up most people's whole lower half, as well as their eyes.

(Sorry I keep using these pics.  They're just the finest examples I've ever seen online.)

Good advice here.  Also get yourself a foam roller.

Have you brought this up with your trainer? What has he said? I totally understand wanting second opinions, but if he isnt of assistance with flexability issues, he isnt worth your money.

To be honest, no I havent yet. I will when I see him next week. I was just wondering if there was something I should do on my own.

Pavel's Relax in Stretch was very helpful for me. Not just do these stretches, but what flexibility is, PNF, forced relaxation, what you are actually "stretching" and how flexibility isn't a goal in itself but a means to an end for your specific needs.

My trainer and I worked on it today, and I feel much better. We worked on full range of motion, etc. He smoked my ass pretty damn good.

O well, that is what he is here for.

Interesting article in T-Nation on the topic.  It's called, "Third World Squat,"  read it here: www.t-nation.com/readArticle.do?id=1856085&cr=

QFT.  The foam roller is one of the greatest inventions ever.
ETA: you'll cry like a baby if you're using it right, but you'll feel better afterward.
