I was doing some bench presses, when all of a sudden a sharp, burning sensation developed in the palm of my hand and on the inside of my wrist. Stopped right away. After my workout, the there was a itchy sort of irritation in the palm of my hand. Iced it and the pain went away in a couple hours. I waited about a week before I did any more bench presses. The next time I did do them, I reduced the number of sets and reps, and didn't experience any pain. Figure I had things licked, only to find out that four days later when doing bench presses again, the pain came back quick and strong before I could even do 5 reps. In a little over a week since then, without doing any weight lifting, that itchy sort of pain in my palm has come and gone repeatedly, such that I can't be sure that it is getting better. Its not tendonitis. I have dealt with that before, and this is something completely different. I don't think it is carpal tunnel, since there has not been any swelling or bruising at any time. No weird sensations in my fingers, just in the palm of my hand. Best I can tell it is some sort of nerve damage. Just wondering if anyone else here had experienced anything like this before and had it diagnosed. I plan on seeing a doctor, but I don't have a lot of hope that it will be properly diagnosed. Any help would be greatly appreciated. |
| The exact same thing happened to me years ago. Now when I bench anything more than 135 lbs (usual weight is 250 for 12) I have to wear gloves or the pain is way too much. I have never experienced the pain while using gloves (currently sheick gloves with a wristwrap) so I can say from my experience that the pain is still there when gloves arnt used. Hell if you find out what it is post it up because it sounds like you and I have the same issue. You didnt specify but with me the pain is only in my right hand...or is it my left...anyhow its only in one hand. Best of luck but invest in some gloves and see if it helps. |

I know what caused it. It was a mixture of bad form during the press and putting too much pressure on the heal of my hand in the couple of weeks leading up to the injury, due to using a laptop with mouse on a table surface that was too low for good posture. Best I can tell with some searching on the web, I probably have damaged either my Median or Ulnar nerve. Median nerve damage as you may know is usually referred to as carpal tunnel. I have also been dealing with some tendonitis and knee pain over the past year due to too much exercise. At this point, I have decided to become a couch potato for at least one whole month and then start over from square one, slowly working my way back up. This month of rest is going to probably kill me, but if I survive it and my body heals, it will be worth it, I guess. |
