I stopped into a gym in town here now that I have moved to check out the sceen. I got a pass to the gym out on the highway which I have been going to for a couple of days, but wanted to explore my options.

I did not think that the place was open due to the lights being off, but there was a lot of trophies and powerlifting/body building pics in the window so I tried the door. It was open, and there was a guy inside. I asked if they were open, and he said that they were so I went in and talked with him.

He was an older guy who had obviously had the gym in that place for a long time judging by the pics on the wall. He said that they were still open, and that a membership would cost 30 bucks a month, but that the club that I had gone to previously had stolen all of his members. He was pretty bitter about it, and stated that all of the people who had worked out there for years, and who he had trained for free had jumped ship when the new place opened up with the fancy machines and the dollar less dues.

I was really bummed out by the sight of this guy who was currently cutting the name plates off of some of the trophies with a knife. You could tell that it broke his heart to have his gym going down the tubes.

I think that this place would have been a great one for me, as I am really much more at home in places which look like they should be named the iron pit than any thing else. However I was told that he keeps pretty limited hours due to the fact that he only has a few members left, and that I should really just go to the club down on the highway and mention that I had spoken to him so that I could get a better rate.

It is really too sad to see places like this going the way of the ptaradactyl, as the goofy wieners who are only at the gym to do what ever it is they do in there while they are in my way get pretty old pretty quickly. I really think that the world could use a few more iorn pits.

If he had good trainers, athlets in search of results would come.

Maybe you guys could challenge the new gym to a dodgeball tournament.

There used to be a YMCA down the road from me.  Me and my dad worked out there from the time I was 9 or 10 (gotta love being short enough to not be seen over the counter ) until it was closed for a "bigger and better" YMCA in 2002.  The equipment was shitty and I was afraid to use the whirlpool, but if given the choice I'd workout there again in a heartbeat.  Between all the memories I have from working out there and the overall atmosphere of the place, I'd pick it over some high-dollar joint any day.  Damn I miss that place.....

Would someone really select a gym based on the "trainers" available?

My concept of a gym does not include people who are there paid to be "trainers."  Just lots of weights, benches, and cables.  I guess the day of that kind of gym is gone.  Even the legendary Iron Island in Alameda, California no longer exists.  RIP!

I agree with this 100%.  Although I will add that it would be nice if everyone in there was serious about working out.  I'm tired of these assholes who spend more time talking between sets (and I use that term loosely here) than they do working out.  I need to find a little hole-in-the-wall joint that scares the shit out of people who aren't actually into working out.  And when I say "into" I mean it.  Although I haven't worked out for a couple months (car accident..... bastards) when I was lifting most days the first thing I thought of when I woke up was "I get to lift today!"  Shit, when I was in college I'd skip class to go to the gym.  If anyone's ever seen the Ronnie Coleman DVD "Cost Of Redemption" (I posted a clip in that video thread) you'll find the EXACT kind of gym I like working out in filled with the exact kind of people I want to work out with.

I work out at 24hr fitness.  I blew my hammy doing wind sprints and my only cardio is doing the circuit training set up they  have.  My new biggest pet peve is people who sit on the god damned circuit training specific line and do 3 sets and rest while on the machine.  I think I am going to flip out one of these days if I have to wait for another jack ass who hogs a machine you are only supposed to be on for one set and wont move.

Why was he cutting the name plates off the trophies?

Why don't you just ask them to move so you can do a set?  That's what I do and the worst I've ever gotten is the guy doing his next set right there and then letting me on.

People are assholes, what can you say.

I go to 24 Hour as well, and there are some people that will prob never see below 15% bf untill they figure out the machines are supposed to be used for lounging!

Blew out your hams doing sprints? Not stretching out very well?

My flexibility sucks but I had been working on it for a while.  I have a history of muscle strains when sprinting and not in sprinting shape.  I did a propper warm up and stretch.  Everything was fine till I tried to pull an all out 100% sprint.  I made it 3 steps after I hit top speed then I heard and felt a pop in my hamstring. I should be good to start jogging again this or next week.

I can't even imagine what that felt like.  Just getting a cramp in my hamstring almost brings  me to tears.

Why dot you just pay the $30 a month and use his Gym when he is open. If you like the place that much. Heck if you use it once a week it 7.50 a seesion. heck that cheaper than most ranges cost.
