The other day when out running I passed a guy that appeared to have a watch that beeped every so often and he was using it to set his pace.  Anyone know of such a thing?  Ideally I'd like to be able to set it to also beep at certain intervals like once every 60 seconds or so.

I used to have a watch like that years ago. Forget what kind it was, but I think it was a Bill Rodgers signature model or something. Don't know if it's still made or if there are others like it currently on the market. Check your local running store. Personally, in races it's kind of maddening to be running within hearing distance of someone who's got one of those watches beeping away because their cadence/rhythm is rarely the same as yours.

Did it beep for him to speed up and slow down or in a rythm?  If the former it was a HRM watch and he was wearing a chest strap I bet.  Look at Polar.

Probably a heart-rate monitor, beeping when his heart rate drops below a certain bpm.

If a watch says it times "intervals", does that mean I can set it up to beep every 2 minutes, then 3 minutes, then 2 minutes, then 3 minutes, etc?

Sounds more like a monitor

Or went above.

If the guy was changing his speed radically when the watch beeped, it was probably a generic running watch like a Timex Ironman that has an interval timer.  If the guy was looking at his watch and making minor changes, probably a HRM.

Most of the Polar HRMs also have interval timers.  More spendy than a running watch, but can provide more feedback if you take the time to learn about and understand heart rate training.

A watch needs to have multiple interval timers or it will just be the same time repeated. Good news is that timex ironman series and several nike running watches have from 3-10 interval timers at about $30-50. It's a great way to partition a tempo or farlek type run.

I don't know a thing about heart rate monitors.

So with this setup I can set an "interval" of 2 minutes, then 3 minutes, then 2 minutes, etc?

Yup. Here's one with 5 timers...

You can put up to 5 different intervals that'll repeat, or you can have 1 or 2 etc that repeat. Pretty flexible.

I have a Garmin Forerunner 201 which is GPS  based.  It's awesome for hiking, biking and running.

there are newer models which one will do a bit less than the 201 and others that do more, including a HR monitor.

+1 Garmin Forerunner 201. Theres a steal at Target now: the 201 is $37.99, dropped from $150 for no apparent reason. I love mine! Thanks to Arfcom for the deal. Gives you pace, distance, heart rate, a map of your trail, even coordinates if you need 'em.
