I've lost a lot of weight in the last 3 years. I'm on my way (almost there) to being a non-fat person. First time in my life, and I turned 56 in Feb.
A friend started to really encourage me to start working out and invited me on a weekly basis to be his guest at his gym. I finally went and now I'm hooked. The gym had a $99, 3 month summer special which I bought, then converted into a regular yearly membership before the 3 month period ended.
I can't see myself quiting. It's become part of my lifestyle.
I registered at bodybuilding.com and another site, but am still just reading and learning my way around.
As soon as I get rid of the last of my fat, I'll start lifting for strength and some mass.

The diet that I was on for almost 2 years consisted of starving myself all day, then having one meal at night just a few hours before going to bed.
I lost a lot of weight, along with cannabilizing a lot of muscle. Since I'm built like a pear, (not anymore) the weight and muscle came off my upper body first.
When I first started to workout last June, I couldn't bench a 100 pounds, ONCE.
Of course that's improved tremendously, but I'm still recovering srength and muscle that I lost dieting.
The last year has seen me be a lot smarter in the way I've continued my weight loss program, eating a lot healthier, and using exercize and more exercize to obtain results.

That is awesome!  I totally understand about becoming adicted to lifting.  Its my drug (only drug) of choice.    Try eating small meals all day(6 to 7) with a high protein content.  (1gram of protein per lb of body weight total throughout the day) The high protein will help you keep your gains(muscle) yet keeping your metabolism up throughout the day, ie loose more fat.   Keep it up!

At 6'6" I decided that I would probably not be a good power lifter in the long run, so I have decided to just fill out my frame as much as possible. I have been lifting for years, but I shattered my leg about 5 years ago which really set me back. I could hardly feed myself, and I could not work so I really could not afford to eat much anyway. I was barely 180 when that was over, but I am now 240, and thinner than I have ever been at this weight.

I have been over to bodybuiding.com, and wannabebig.com. I don't really post much though, as most guys are worse search nazis that the dupe police over here.

Nope. I'm 2old for that kid stuff However I've known others that have and all were doing ''roids of some sort. One wears a cafater(sp) to this day. Another has to take a ____acid supplement daily for a torn bicep @ 60yrs old. I would have in my youth, but I'm glad I did'nt now. I still have my liver registering 100%. NOW ''roids are illegal yet I know a few coppers doing them w/o repercussions. GOTTO BE BIG! its all mindset.

Its not that hard.  First off your body can only really digest about 50 grams at a time.  So 4 meals with 50 grams and you have 200. I eat 6 to 7 a day and just figure out how much I need per meal to get my disired amount.   So depending on your weight , you can see how it works.  Think about it the average protein shake(depending on who makes it)  is about 40 to 50 grams.  A can of tuna is 56 gams,  8oz of chicken breast has 20, so you can see its really all about diet ie what you eat through out the day and how many meals to take in.

its a great lifestyle..and dont get it wrong, it is a lifestyle, not a hobby. You have to weave bodybuilding in with work and with play and sleep. You have to eat all day long and make sure that you take in the right supplements and nutrients.  Its extremely fulfilling though. WHen I started years ago I was 145lbs or so..in the 12yrs Ive been lifting I packed on a bit over 100lbs at my peak...Im 5-8 and weighed in at 247 at 8 percent....Ive since torn my pec but recovering and lifting hard again......right now sitting in the 230's.....Before I did it to compete, now that ive got a big divit in my chest its more for the fun of it and for the feeling of achieving a goal.

I know what you mean.  I'm 6'5 @ 230 and I'll never have a big squat.  I can actually bench press more than I can squat ass to the ground.  HOWEVER... I find that for some reason my body is perfectly set up fo deadlifting.

The human body can absoloutely, positively digest and use more than 50 grams of protein in one sitting.  That is 100% urban legend. No scientific evidence backs up this claim. Easiest example of people using more to cite is burn victims.  If the body needs it it can use it no matter how much you eat.

So what about all of the natural competitions?  They do get tested.

I suppose that depends on how good the lab is.  I don't know what the testing is like today, but I gather the protocols they use on Olympic athletes are pretty good.  Not foolproof, but definitely better than 20 years ago.  The key is genuine random testing, which is difficult to implement and harder to enforce.

When I was competing in drug free powerlifting meets in the late 80s and early 90s, I knew that I was the only person I knew for certain that was 100% clean.  I knew more than a handful of people who were quite candid about their drug use and how easy it was for them to beat the tests.  One woman I know eventually got caught, but I think she was careless.  Back then I think the testing (which was minimal in terms of numbers of lifters tested per meet) was for show, and they weren't really trying to catch the cheaters.  The woman in question above was so obviously juicing that Helen Keller would have noticed it, yet she won a lot of big meets (and I think a nationals) before they caught her.

Also, remember that alot of testing simply involves a lie detector test. If its a piss test then they can still pass. The 'natural' guys can take orals like dbol and cease usage a few days before the test and pass....they can also use insulin and gh with no worry of being caught as no tests exist at this date for them and isulin, taken correctly can make you very massive. Most injectable drugs (minus nandrolones) can be taken up to a few weeks before a test and still pass.

I'm starting back into lifting. stoped to run my business 7 days a week / 12-14 hour days for eight years. Really messed up doing that , went from a lean 215 down to 180.  Sold business last year, now dont have to work BTW I also shattered my leg about 15 years ago. That sucked, had an external fixator on for almost a year.
