Based on our daily rate we should make a million handily.
Looking at team standings, Giroux Bros has been averaging 25k/day/member. Those guys have too much free time on their hands. |

Tonight's regular gym workout includes rowing. 3:00 max-distance rows, 1:00 other stuff. Repeat 4x. So basically a series of sprints followed by gasping for air, rinse and repeat.
Hopefully all this work pays off. |

Hidden benefit of rowing lots of meters: reduced right shoulder pain. My shoulders have been bothering me for years, due to poor posture sitting at a computer every day. I've worked through most of the issues, except my right shoulder has severe ROM limits.
Last night I was able to do pushups and dips with minimal pain, for the first time in about a year. I credit rowing and improved upper back strength and mobility. There's probably a benefit from strengthening low back/glute/hams as well. |
|
Holy cow we quietly passed a million meters. That's a lot of meters. Fun fact: If you took all those meters and laid them end to end they would stretch 1,000 kilometers.

A couple of years ago there was a million meter (for the year) thread. Ant chance we could get another one rolling?

Last day for this challenge tomorrow. Get your meters in while you can.
Also, added a million meter challenge thread, pinned at the top. Plenty of time to get your Kms in this year. |

Be sure to get the technique right at the beginning, breaking bad habits is much harder than forming good ones. C2 lists coaches on their web site, it might be worthwhile buying a few hours of in person coaching time. The informal coaching from the collegiate rowers was invaluable and helped save my back. Think of it as a series of deadlifts with a compromised position. Keep your core braced. Sit up straight, don't let your pelvis tilt, hinge from the hips. The force curve display is very useful. Start out with a lower damper setting. Once I realized the damper is similar to gearing on a bike, I understood how to make use of it and how I can set it for different workouts. Be aware, speed will suffer as will pushing movements. Add in pushups, bench press, and overhead press to balance the bitchin' upper back strength. Rowing makes your posterior chain strong, but lacks speed: box jumps and olympic lifts will help develop that newfound butt strength into power and speed. https://www.concept2.com/indoor-rowers/training/technique-videos/getting-started |

If you forget, your lumbar spine will remind you in a few days. During long pieces I slow down and do a segmented stroke, emphasizing each motion and focusing on my core and hip position, and being sure I fully extend my legs and hinge forward enough to feel a stretch in my hams. If I just stroke away my hips rotate back, which will end badly for the L-spine. |

Try some of the exercises where you row with arms only, then hinging only, then legs only. Then start combining them into a full stroke. When I'm doing a short piece for time I focus on initiating with my butt and hams explosively, to accelerate the handle as fast as possible, and engage the flywheel as early in the stroke as I can. Watch the force curve: I try to make the left side of the curve vertical, then keep the top either flat or slightly arched. The bad habit I develop is: reaching too far forward to try and catch a little earlier and lengthen my stroke. That's probably a recipe for injury. The force curve is a great tool: This is a pretty brief discussion, the pdf at the bottom is good reading: https://www.concept2.com/indoor-rowers/training/tips-and-general-info/using-the-force-curve Mathematically integrating the force curve (calculating the area under the curve) calculates the energy you put into the stroke. Talking to one of the collegiate rowers, we were looking at my force curve and I made an observation rooted in engineering: Ideally, I want to maximize the area under that curve, in other words, put the maximum energy into the flywheel with each stroke. She said that's exactly what her coaches worked toward. Here's some more discussion from the C2 forums: https://www.c2forum.com/viewtopic.php?t=10349 |

It's worth reaching out. |
|
Slide forward on the seat so your hams don't interfere with the front edge, make sure your pelvis is not rotated posteriorly, and sit up tall. Also tough it out for about 10 days of hard rowing. This exercise taxes the posterior chain, you might be feeling soreness in muscles that haven't been used in anger. Seriously, I think the pads might cover for poor technique that could lead to injury.
The pad will raise you off the seat slightly, further compromising what is already a pretty poor deadlift/clean position. My ass is not extremely hard, I felt soreness for the first week and my sciatica doesn't like really long rows. But by focusing on technique and position I was able to row huge volumes in my first serious month on the machine. |

Did any of you guys experience any elbow pain? I don’t notice it while rowing but the next day it’s pretty annoying until I get up and moving
