I started on the Atkins diet two weeks into January. so far the results are fine with me. I have lost 27lbs as to date. I have not changed too much of my eating habit, just lost the bread and potatoes and cut out the six pack of Dr Peppers and two candy bars per day. Not to mention the cheese crackers, chips and so on. Cut out about all the refined sugars. Started exercise program I can live with.

The problem is the water intake. I started drinking the two liters per day and came down with a sore throat, drainage and headaches. I drank bottled water I bought, not tap water. I eased off the water because of the sore throat and headaches, the problem went away in about a week. So I started again with the water, same effect. Three times now. WTF is going on? Can I be allergic? Anyone ever hear of this?? fullclip

are you buying/drinking a particular brand of water?

I started with the Dasani brand, and after the first problem just bought the cheap United Stores brand of water.. fullclip

Do you think it could be an allergic reaction to plastisizers leaching out of the plastic bottles into the water?

Never thought of it. I always carry a 3gallon water can on my truck that I fill with filtered water every day. In the summer I drink a lot of water and never had this problem. I'll figure a way to keep a glass of water close by without using the plastic bottles. Thing is they're so handy. Thanks for the idea.. fullclip

Have you been keeping the 3 gallon water jug clean?  You may have something growing in that thing/some crud that you're having a reaction to.

Maybe it's more of a bacterial thing from the jug rather than a allergy to something in the water.

2 capfulls of bleach and fill that jug up with water halfway and give it a good shaking.

See if that helps.

Fullclip,

We used to buy Snapple in the glass bottles and wash them out once we drank them. Then we filled them with water and kept them in the fridge. That worked well. After a couple of months the lids would start getting rusty and we had to start over.

Seeing as you are on the Atkins, you might need to have someone drink the sugar water for you. [:)]

Another vote for the bacterial problems in the container. I know that my shaker can get pretty rancid after a few days of not washing it out. I know I should proably wash it every day, but I am lazy.

The diet for the first week was the hardest thing I ever did. The loss of the sodas nearly killed me. but I think I will stick with it for a while now. I already can wear last years clothes, they were nearly new.
I think I will buy me a new water jug/can, smaller so I can carry it with me a little easier. Thanks guys... fullclip

Good job so far with the diet.  Do you plot down what you eat into a notebook or a chart?  I never realized how many carbs I ate per day until I saw it on paper.  ITs amazing to find out that foods that I thought were good for me contained a bit more carbs and fat than I thought.
I would definetly store your water in something else.  I have a few gallon jugs around the house that i think came from Olive oil or some fresh maple syrup.  I would try to procure a few of those for to keep your water in.  They are easy to clean and you can always replace the cover with a cork if the metal screw on cap starts to deteriorate.

I don't chart or log my foods. But I have become a label watcher. I don't eat or drink anything without checking the label first. The veggies and meats are fresh, not canned, and until the water problem I drank nothing but water. When I figure the problem out I will go back to that. fullclip
