What's the deal with these?

I'm not trying to be a dick, but your question is kind of open to interpretation.

You take them before working out

Energy, focus, pumps is the claim. Some are better than others and they also offer stim free ones as well if you dont want the caffeine. Some seem to be hit or miss with some people, so it may be a game of just finding the one that works for you

If you have anything important the next day, be careful using them in the afternoon/evening until you now how they affect you. They can cause sleep issues.

Yup. Anarchy gives me a good energy boost with no obvious side effects, C4 gave a good boost and improved focus but made me a bit nauseous, Shatter SX-7 gave a good boost but had me on my knees out on the lawn trying not to puke about 30-40 minutes into my workout.

They're different for everyone, so you'll really have to try a few to figure out what works for you.

Hell yeah. If I take Anarchy after 4pm, I won't get to sleep until after midnight...and I have to get up at 3am for work.

IMO, they are not good for you and offer you no health benefits whatsoever.  They may help you with your energy, etc., during a workout.  But I've found they're not necessary for me.  If you ever need to do anything extended, you can't keep taking pre-workout over and over again throughout the day.  I went from using C4 to just drinking some bcaas throughout the day and beta alanine pills every morning.  I'm ready to go whenever.  And C4 type stuff is addicting, and you start needing more and more to get the same effects.

As others above noted, I had issues with C4 and Jacked, which are two of the more popular.

I take MyPre made by MyProtein.  It's essentially a sugar free Red Bull mixture with BCAA's and Creatine added.  If you catch it on sale you can get it for about $.50 a serving which is cheaper than a Red Bull.

I also don't take it every single time.  I use it for squat and deadlift sessions.

First of all, the ingredients are not even all listed.  C4 for instance, has proprietary ingredients which are unnamed.  Secret sauce.  It has some beta alanine, but not enough.  So I go straight to the stuff I know I want out of that mixture.

By the way, be very careful with mixtures from truenutrition [.com].  (Protein and carbs, not preworkout).  Shit made me violently ill during my little powerlifting thingy.  Threw up for a good 20 minutes.  No way in hell I'm ever ordering anything from them again.

I usually drink a cup of coffee about an hour before I workout.

Makes me have to pee halfway through the workout, but helps me pep up a bit.

Tons of pre workouts out there .... Majority have stims though some do not .... I personally avoid any with yohimbine that shit makes me jittery, anxiety and just overall shitty

My Favorites:
Ergogenix Ergoblast
Cellulcor C4
Controlled Labs White Flood

Some out there have 3-400mg of caffeine ..... I prefer the ones with lower amounts of caffeine (80-150mg)

They definitely can help give you that extra edge/boost

I have tried.

c4 - the first pre i started using

assault - old formula - my favorite - would make my hair tingle like i had an electric current going through me.

assault - new formula - not so good- meh. supposedly they changed to a caffein composite? it is not the same anymore.

GAT - holy shit. I can handle half a scoop max.

I have a sample of The Curse at home.

I just got a can of ON pre workout to try. it is in the same can as C4 so if the supplement industry is like ammo industry its made by the same place with a different label slapped on it.

A great number of the preworkout drinks were using AMP Citrate. It's stronger than caffeine and has been recently banned by the FDA for use in nutritional products. My favorite preworkout, DVST8, was using it. I loaded up with about ten cans before it went off the market.

Not sure of their new formula. The guy I trust at my local supplement shop indicated to me that some companies will fly under the radar and keep using it.

I tried some stuff called Insanity last summer. That shit make my head itch and made me short of breath like I had just run a mile. Not sure what was in it but I am staying well away from that company.

There are almost too many to count out there.

But why do so many people take this stuff?

Does it offer any real advantage other than an energy boost?

In theory some of the ingredients could help you train harder/longer.  It may be mostly bro-science.

A lot of it is for the energy boost though.

I know a lot of guys in the manual labor fields, construction etc where they are pretty beat by the end of the day.

A lot of those guys will take pre-workouts for some boost.

Personally, I get up pretty early so I am slowing down by 5pm (when I train) so I enjoy the extra lift. And I am pretty much used to them at this point so I don't have any problem getting to sleep at 11.

But I will not take anything before a long run. It's usually just before weight training.

It has been said in the past that the hardest lift if them all is your ass off the couch. A good pre will give you energy you need at the end of a long day to get your workout in. It shouldn't be necessary every time, but sometimes you just need that extra boost.

I take B4 by BPI. It's not a drink, it's a single pill and has caffeine in it and is considered a thermogenic preworkout supp. I like it alot and would venture to say it's my fav pre I've ever tried. I tend to stay away from any of the preworkout drinks, as they make me feel bloated. The B4 gives me that extra pep I need for an evening workout, helps me get a good sweat going and increases my focus. Give it a try sometime.

Tried FBX2.0, was crap.
C4 was good, but made me jittery, didn't like the taste.
Tried BPI Burn XS thermogenic from a sample...once....WOW.  Talk about wired.
Currently taking Jym Supplements Pre workout.

And the good pre-workouts have the stuff for energy, and nutrition as well, creatine and the like.

Jacked (original formula) was the best I have ever tired. That shit made me feel like I could rape a gorilla. Why was that taken off the market anyways?

I do have some N.O. Xplode but it gives me a stomach ache if I do some high intensity exercises like burpes, etc after lifting. Now a days I just drink a cup of coffee in the morning.

DMAA, very powerful stimulant. The place I buy my supplements at are run by some former Marines. I asked them about the military guys that died from it and they were taking upwards of 500% of the recommended amount.

Can you explain this? I'm no expert, I know people say to cycle the pre-workouts and not to take them all the time.
I can understand the pre-workouts that have real stimulants in them (like Jack3d), sure, but most of them just have a strong dose of caffeine, ( plus extracts of this and that, but are they habid forming?).
The way I figure it, I've been drinking massive amounts of coffee in the morning anyway for the last 10 years, no downside to getting my caffeine mixed with creatine and some other nutrients?
