Serious question.  What's your attitude on curls?

I used to do them once a week, but for the past few years, I've concentrated more on compound exercises.  Should I bring the curls back, bro?

For the girls

Sorry, I have nothing constructive to add. I have a buddy that no matter if we are doing squats or what he constantly says curls for the girls.

There was a study out of Ball State back in 2000 that gets tossed around the industry a bit.  Basically two groups where both had upper body compound lifts but the test group also added bicep curls and tricep extensions.  After ten weeks, although both groups gained size and strength, the addition of curls and extensions did not provide a significant gain to the test group.  You should be able to find it online, a lot of people cite it yet I can't seem to find the actual study.

FWIW I have them as part of my routine.  I do a couple upper body isolation exercises once a week.  I think it just depends on what your goals, where you're at, and how effective you want to be.

I do curls.

Bicep health.  Biceps hypertrophy.

Hate them though, and any athlete who does a full workout of biceps.... Should get shanked in the dick.

I'm sure there are plenty of competitive body builders that would say otherwise

If you don't consider them athletes...

I'm down to 1 set a week when I do back and 1 set of tris when i do chest versus 3 sets of each previously.  So far my arms havent shrunk.

Since I'm focused on sailing and cardio a  bit more, I had to cut back somewhere.

I don't do them, but I do chin ups.

I don't think there's anything wrong with them though, but like dark tide said, "bicep" day is stupid as fuck. IMO they shouldn't be the focus but more of an afterthought and you should never bump a good compound movement in order to make time for curls.

Fuck arms. I hit biceps with heavy chins/pull-ups. Triceps get hit with all my heavy pressing and NGBP.

This

If you do heavy chins and rows you should not need much bicep work. If you want to throw in 2 sets at the end of you regular workout go ahead.

Arm work takes very little energy and effort. I don't see a downside if you enjoy doing it.

Know how I know you don't know what an athlete is?

Definition By Merriam-Webster:
a person who is trained in or good at sports, games, or exercises that require physical skill and strength

I guess that settles it then, they really aren't athletes.

I used to do lots of curls. They never did shit for me except give me tendonitis. Weighted pull-ups seem to work much better.

You know how I know you have no reading comprehension?
It says SKILL and strength. Where the hell is the skill unless you consider getting oiled up, standing on stage in a speedo and flexing as a skill.

Also the actual BB contest requires zero skill or strength it is judged on looks. You can have a 400 lb deadlift or a 800 lb deadlift makes no difference.

Chest thumping aside, you don't think the posing bodybuilders do on stage involves any skill?

Sure, anyone can go up on stage and flex.  But I'm not going to try to demean the work that bodybuilders put into their routines just to grasp at straws.  How many fucking hours did Arnold spend practicing and refining his routine over the years?  That's not a skill at all?

There are thousands of jobs out there that involve skills but that does not make everyone that does them a "athlete".  Being an iron worker on a high rise wearing a 70lb tool belt carring a rivit gun while walking on a 12" beam involves skill that does not make him a athlete.

BB  are very dedicated and spend tons of time working on there routine, but a lot of people spend a ton of time refining things at theirr job.....still doesn't make them an athlete.  Don't get me wrong I have respect for the many hours BB spend in the gym, working on there routine, dieting, cardio, etc.....just don't consider them athletes.

If it gives you a warm, fuzy to think of BB as "athletes" go ahead, doesn't matter to me one way or the other.  I won't ever consider them "athletes"

EDIT
This is way off topic from the orignal post.....sorry about that OP.

Curls are necessary - do 2-3 sets on your pull day after doing 3-4 sets of back.

21s are a great way to end your workout
