So I've been doing Starting Strength for about 3 weeks, and have gotten heavy enough that I can really tell that continueing in running shoes is a bad idea (especially since I have a really messed up ankle anyways).  So I'm torn:  Buy some knock-off Chuck's, or spend some real money on high quality lifting shoes.

I'm leaning heavily towards the cheap shoes for now, unless somebody has a good reason not too?

Chuckie Ts.

I do have a pair of crossfit INOV-8s; they are nice and light and have held up very well so far (probably 250-300 workouts).  I don't like running in Chucks so I only wear them when I won't be running during the session.

Treat yourself to some nice sperrys, only $175

Or get some chucks or the off brand stuff at targets.  They all work and no need for expensive lifting shoes just yet.

I don't have exceptionally wide feet, but Chucks simply don't fit.  Plus, if you're going to follow SS, you're better off with the elevated heel a real lifting shoe affords you as opposed to a flat-soled shoe.

Get the lifting shoes. The elevated heel and supportive sole will allow you to go deeper on squats and afford you the stability you need. Chucks are ok for deadlifts because you'll want to be as close to the ground as possible, but they're not great for squats due to the zero heel-toe elevation change.decent lifting shoes can be had for well under $100, just look around online.

It's not quite as simple as just yes or no.

1. Do you high bar squat or low bar squat?
2. Are you going to be oly lifting?

Low bar squats, with no plans for oly lifting in the near future.  My plan is to run the "Novice" phase of Starting Strength (which I'm not sure if really counts as a true Novice phase, since I'm really just building back up to the numbers I had while deployed), and then move into some version of 5/3/1.  I don't have easy access to an Oly coach who speaks English, and I know from messing around with them a little in the past that I'll just hurt myself lol.

Ok, in that case with low bar squats I don't think oly shoes will do a lot for you. I'd suggest chucks or any hard soled, flat soled shoes.

I love oly shoes, but they make a squat more quad dominant, and they aren't really needed as much with low bar squats IMO. I high bar squat though, so YMMV. Some of the other guys might offer advice because I think they are mostly low bar squatters.

I base my shoe selection on 2 things.

1) Stance width

and

2) mobility

--- Wide stance uses more glute/ham, less quad (generally speaking), so chucks are good for the side-support, which oly shoes are generally lacking.   This is for the "spread the floor" people.

Narrower stance allows better quad drive, so oly shoes help that, as you're "pushing" through the legs (quad dominant) rather than spreading the floor.

--- With that said, Oly shoes throw me forward, so though I'm getting hamstring on calf/burried depth as far as my knes are concerned, my hips dont break parallel by much at all. This causes a BUNCH of people missed lifts when they switch to oly shoes (or even first start using knee wraps).

Personally.  I squat just wide of shoulder width, I get better power from chucks/wrestling shoes.   If I go narrow, and squat at shoulder or hip width, I get some help from oly shoes, but i run into the roadblock mentioned above.

I'm a cheap chuck fan. The cheap ones have less cushion than the real ones so that works better for me. I squat wide and low bar.

ETA: I've also seen some strong mofos squat in work boots

I've lifted in my combat boots before- you can do a LOT worse.

I squat SS style, low bar shoulder width stance.  I use the 0.5" heel Rogue Do Wins.  I really like them, they work well for me.  I have a long torso and short legs, so I am more upright squatting low bar, once I put on the shoes, it seems like my squats are balanced between quad and hamstring usage.  I have never tried chuck's so I cannot compare to that option.

Day 1 lifting in a set of Chuck's.   Amazing how much more solid squats and dl's felt without all the cushion of running shoes.  I reset 20lbs on DL back to 315, because I tweaked my back a little bit on Thursday at 335 so figured I'd just bounce back a bit and build back up from there.

Thanks for your advice everybody.

Too much of a running shoe to make a very good lifting shoe.
