What is the cheapest shake you guys have come across in your experiences? I have chickens, so an egg can be thrown in the mix most of the time. Cheapest whey powder you know of? Cheap "recipe" you came up with? Pinching pennies here, any thoughts/ suggestions appreciated. I used to be able to afford the good stuff... Gold Standard, caseins, high protein meals etc.

Wal mart protons and black beans with whatever other cheap source.  I do tuna a good amount.  There is some russian type of meat product really cheap, I can't remember the name though.

I eat tuna and balsamic vinegar for lunch. Lots of cheap protean in tuna.

Yup, tuna was always my go-to protein. OP was asking about shakes though ... not sure about what a tuna shake would taste like.

Maybe I'll try making one just for the hell of it!

I'm pretty sure that Body Fortress whey powder from Walmart is one of the cheapest you can get.  I use the vanilla and it doesn't taste too bad.  In fact, if you mix with milk it's quite tasty.

I use stuff called "Pure Protein" it is $20 at my walmart. 23 servings of 25 grams of protein each in a tub.

I too would like to know if there is stuff around that is cheaper then that.

Nice.  I have a Sams opening up close to me in about a month.  I'll probably switch to that.

Yeah, I was talking about shakes, worded it weird. Not like I will oppose other suggestions, though. Ill pass on the tuna shake. But I have a Sams Club right across the street, I'll have to check it out. That price sounds about right. The 60 bucks for five pounds is out of my range.

Ill throw in an egg and call it a day.

For me "cheap" + protein supp's = blowing liquid out of my ass. Especially anything made by Muscletech. Even the EAS cheap stuff is better than that garbage. I felt toxic if I consumed anything Muscletech!

BSN Syntha 6 is hands down the absolute best tasting protein made! Why suffer through bad shit?

The Body Fortress stuff at Walmart is about the same price per pound. It's about $15 for a two pound tub, and the taste isn't terrible.

You guys do realize the weight of the tub is relatively meaningless, since these products don't all contain the same amount of protein per pound, right? "Bargain" supplements are often not a bargain at all when you do a little math.

You have to multiply protein grams per serving  X  servings per container to find how many grams of protein are actually in the container. Then, divide that by the total price to find how much you're paying for each gram of protein. It's a pain in the ass, but so is gettin' fucked.

Of course then there's also the quality of the protein, but that's a whole 'nuther discussion and I don't know much about it. I'm an old guy, I just get my protein from my food.

I was gonna mention this but didn't want to look like a geek. lol. The Pure Protein that I get at walmart comes out to 28.5 grams of protein per dollar.

I would like to know how many servings are in the muscletech 5 lb bag so I can do the math.

Body Fortress at my Wal-Mart had it on sale this week.

The Vanilla is 30 grams per scoop.

It was 15 bucks.

I basically buy a bunch of fruit, freeze it. Throw it in my shaker cup (About 3/4s full), add 1 scoop of protein, a tablespoon of chia seed, half coconut milk, half orange juice. Blend it. I then drink if for breakfast. It is great.

Mondays....I somehow forgot to add a scoop of protein this morning. I was wondering why it tasted different.

Muscle Pharm Combat powder.

It is an excellent matrix of slow and quick release proteins, with a digestive enzyme blend to help your body absorb said proteins, plus a good combination of Branch Chained Amino Acids for recovery and endurance. Not to mention it comes in about a dozen DELICIOUS flavors. A 4lb tub runs 39.99, which is well worth it. Don't skimp on your protein by purchasing the wal mart special, artificial sweeteners and a lack of digestive enzymes can wreak havoc on your body. Combat powder contains Hydrolyzed whey, micellar casein, and egg albumen which are all highly bioavailable in addition to other proteins in the mix.

BSN syntha-6 is a close 2nd competitor.

Remember, if you're bulking, keep it clean and eat heavy. 3500-4500 clean calories a day with 1g+/lb protein and a proper exercise regime is all that's required. I guarantee you'll bulk up, while keeping body fat gains to an absolute minimum. Cardio while bulking also discourages body fat to form.

If you're serious about lifting, I strongly recommend purchasing a BCAA supplement. They increase endurance, strength, and shorten recovery time. I recommend BSN amino X or muscle pharm amino 1. BCAAs is just micronized protein that absorbs instantly, and some products contain electrolytes or vitamins and other compounds beneficial to lifting.

Meh.  If your are going to throw out numbers, make sure that you get them right.  Body fortress claims 30 grams of protein per 42 gram serving and the TN whey protein concentrate is 21 grams per 30 gram serving.  So really you are looking at 29.4 grams of protein in an equivalent serving size.  And you don't have to piss out your ass taking the TN stuff.

I couldn't stand the Six Star stuff. I had to mix it with vanilla almond milk just to make it drinkable. I even passed on three 2 lb tubs of that stuff that my local Kroger had in the clearance section for $7 each. I just can't force myself to drink that nasty shit. I prefered the Body Fortress stuff...but I don't buy that stuff anymore either. I buy the ON from Costco. Costs about $55 for a 4.5lb tub, and it actually tastes pretty good.

I'll take that as a compliment. No I'm not a rep, my first post was about a barrel porting question I had. I just enjoy helping people, and consider myself somewhat of a self-proclaimed expert on protein and fitness.

That aside, muscle pharm makes killer protein. I've bulked 45 pounds in seven months while retaining a 6.5% bodyfat. That's how I got my job as a personal trainer.

Pick up some combat powder, you won't be disappointed. BSN Syntha-6 is also good but I prefer the matrix of  MP combat powder.

You might want to be careful with your de facto statements and the self-proclaimed expert aspect. There's a lot of guys on here that will disagree with you and probably have more experience, just so you know and so it's not a surprise when they get after you. But as far as the well-known products you mentioned, they are definitely not bad but are definitely not the best as you say. There's a million and a half brands of supplements out there each with their own marketing ploys. Combat is a blended protein and is not bad, but I would go with an Elite XT or some other ones before Combat as far as price vs quality vs taste goes. BCAAs can be helpful but they are probably not anymore beneficial than eating or drinking any complete protein, unless you follow an IF system where BCAAs don't count as a fast breaker.

Boss, I understand this and do appreciate your input. I used to be able to do all this. I lived in a gym. Your post however IS INFACT informative. But, putting it bluntly, I was in the .mil and could afford all this good stuff. Massive high quality meals, BCAA's, Animal Pak Vitamins, PB, the whole 9. With all due respect, cool beans on the body gains, sounds decent, but I can't afford that (supplements nor food $). Since getting out, I can still work out hard, but now money is really tight. You know, with life going on and all. Protein was a big, thought out purchase for me. Now I'm trying to stay in good shape, stay strong, make improvements etc but I'm being forced to do it more naturally without the supplements. When I get a better cash flow, good stuff will follow.

As for s_gorilla45 - thanks, man this is what I was looking for I might try some out.
