I just paid my annual gym fee, and it got me wondering what other people are paying.
What do you pay and what activities / equipment / coaching / etc does it give you access to? My gym is a 24 Hour Fitness "Super-Sport" - Weights: A dozen bench press benches, an ass load of dumbbells from 5-120lbs, countless Nautilus type equipment (Fun fact - we have the Nautilus HQ in our city, and I'm not proud of it. They do have a nice outdoor sports area that's free to use, though. So they're not completely evil), one squat rack which has the fixed safety bars too high for me to squat in, a single lonesome power cage, and a prowler which I'm embarrassed to admit I never use. All of the weight plates are those retarded hex plates, which I fucking hate. There's also like 2 whole sets of 2.5lb plates in the entire gym
"Functional Fitness" area: TRX suspension thing, a couple large tires (usually locked up), kettlebells only going up to 35lbs (better than nothing), hollow plyo boxes, some light weight wall balls Cardio equipment galore with a Flat screen TV on almost all of them. 2 C2 rowers, though! Basketball court Dance bootcamp studio thing Spin bike room 25 yard lap pool, hot tub, sauna and steam room Locker room As the name implies, the gym is open 24/7. This is nice because it allows me to show up at midnight without having to worry about someone taking up the single power cage to do something stupid. I can use chalk, deadlift in socks (but it really blows with those damn hex plates), and even grunt without being yelled at by staff or kicked out. I signed up for one of those special promotional "we know you're never coming back, so give us a bunch of money up front" deals. It was like $800-900 up front which was good for 3 years, and $210 every year thereafter. A normal monthly membership here is $60 a month, which would be way too much, IMO. |

LA Fitness in Georgia, the standard deal is:
89$ signup fee 30$ first month 30$ last month So your first check is always $150 covering your first and last month. Every normal month in between is also 30$. They have everything you described except most of them are not open 24 hours. they close between 9pm or 11pm depending on the location. This membership also allows you to visit any LA Fitness location in the state with the same card, no extra fees. |

24 hour access
Plenty of machines, dumbbells, curl bars, cable thingys, 2 benches with a couple bars, and some fixed bars upstairs. Squat rack, deadlift platform, bench, ~15 bars, 3000 pounds of weight, and leg press sled in the basement $20 a month/ no contract |
|
I now lift in my personal gym down in my converted work shop. It took me years to get all the equipment and set it up the way I want it. I still have more pieces to pick up.
When I was at the gym, I had good access and it cost 20.00 a month (LEO pricing) I really liked going there but it got to the point where I was meeting folks I had encountered on the job and it got to where I spent more time "avoiding" folks than I did working out. Now, I slip off to my gym, get my deal on and walk back up to the house.... Ah, bliss! |

I lift in my garage so it is open 24/7 but it took me years to get it set up the way I like it. same. i got way too tired of dealing with people in gyms That is the main reason I started my garage gym. Tired of the pack of 4-5 guys in the 20 spending 45 minutes on the only bench press station at the gym. Plus at my home gyms I can listen to whatever music I want, have the equipment I want (within budget), it is my sweat on the equipment, don't have idiots interrupting me during a set, equipment is alway avialable, and I can have my dogs in the gym with me. |

Damn! I wish I wasn't so poor. I've been there. Its worth being even poorer for it ![]() Absolutely! I am definitely not "well to do", have wife, kid, car notes, mortgage, etc., and I rank it as one of my most important expenses. Just have to prioritize. $100/mo spent there is so much more worth it than $25/mo anywhere else locally. The equipment is huge, obviously, but to be surrounded by people that share your goals, some very knowledgeable lifters and coaches, and general awesomeness and human positivity is worth it. Also glad I'm not paying more than $200/mo to lift at a CrossFit gym like some of our strongman had to do. |

Pretty decent setup actually:
3 sets of dumbbels up to 150lbs 2 squat racks 1 power cage several benches, lots of hammer strength machines the necessary cable crossover machines (2) and weight stack machines cople of assisted dip/pullup machines basketball court (use it for suicide sprints) lots of treadmills, ellipticals, bike 2 C2 rowers TRX suspension space kettlebell and light medicine balls (up to 15lb) indoor/outdoor pool tennis and racquetabll courts steam, sauna, etc not bad for $40 per month. Just wish they had a turf are with prowler! |

I have to be carefull and not do anything overhead while under the garage door opener. Already banged it up once.

Pissed that I had to drive to the gym, (20 min/way, hassle of ass-fucks using the squat cage, etc) Bit the bullet, Sold my Concept2 rower and Snagged a 'budget' squat cage, rogue bench, and some Craigslist weights, a CFF prowler. Haven't been happier lifting, ever... For 4 years I paid 30-50/month for a gym though... Prior to that I was a paid coach... |
| I work mainly nights so when I wake up most of the local gyms are about to close and are full of people so I started going to the gym at work. I figured it up and even if I go on my days off its still cheaper than a membership at an actual gym. There isn't a ton of equipment but I can get a good full body workout 24/7 and when I go there's nobody to bother me. When I build our house it'll have a home gym. |

Fitness 19 Although for $12/month and a $19 sign up fee, it's actually better than I originally anticipated. One squat rack Two flat bench stations One decline bench station One incline bench station Handful of adjustable benches for free weights Dumbbells 5-120lbs EZ Bars with fixed weights 20-100lbs All manner of Cybex and Hammer Strength machines One large cable tower with the seats for pulldowns and benches for seated cable rows One smaller cable tower Probably 10-12 treadmills, 10-12 ellipticals, and a couple bikes and stairmasters Main things I'm missing are bumper plates for cleans/jerks, etc and to make deadlifting more enjoyable, and could really use another squat rack for when retards want to curl in it or do rack pulls Can't wait to build a home gym |

I pay $10/mo at my gym, I love it. I'm moving about 15 miles away and keeping the membership. I am considering also joining 24 hour fitness but hate their hex plates, I can't DL with that shit. Either way, it comes out to around $15/mo there through Costco...couldn't imagine paying $800-900 for 3 years
