when you're built like a silverback gorilla.
I have a hard time believing that some folks actually do this shit for fun. They need counseling or something. |

^^^ Love the shirt and would definitely order one if I wasn't such a broke-ass SOB. Finished up my degree in CJ and have been working on getting in better shape for the physical portion of the application process for some local LE agencies. I can exceed every requirement except that damn run. They're not expecting world-record time (1.5 mi. in 14.42), but when you're 5'8" with a 48" chest, 36" waist, and 29" inseam, running is just not your sport. I run ~10 min. mi., which is almost there, but I don't want to squeak by. I'm competing against guys half my age coming back from overseas, so the minimum just won't cut it. |

I love running now, but I do have a smoldering bitterness towards those people that are all leg and can cover three of my strides in one of theirs. |

I look like I should be able to run like a champ. The problem is, I usually get "side-stitches" when I run. They usually start at around the one mile mark, and when they hit me, they hit me hard. I don't always get them, but they are frequent enough that I have never really been able to run more than a few miles. No matter what I try, there is no guarantee that I won't get them. Beyond that, if I try to run after a long period of inactivity, I sometimes get weird pains in my trachea, and the area of my lower jaw just below the front teeth. I don't have any dental issues, or asthma, and no one really seems to know what I am talking about when I describe the pain.
So, in a nutshell, I am not a big fan of running. |

Drink more water 24hrs before your run. If you still get a stitch, try ORS packets. My coach used to tell us to run faster when we got a stitch...I used to sprint for about 100-200 meters and it really would help. |

The side stich thing killed me a first. Read where breathing too fast could cause it. I started figuring out the number or strides for inhale and exhale and got my breathing under control. If I am not in my running rythm and not paying attention they still creep in on me. Are you clenching your teeth when running? I sometimes find myself doing it during a workout and have to really put some thought into relaxing my jaw. |

Ive always felt they were caused more by an increased use of the diaphragm and it being overused (at least more than the person was used to). They go away with training, but its another mouscle, like any other it needs to be pushed from time to time. Ive had an issue with my teeth at times, Ive always felt it was because of the colder weather. Do you get the pain all the time or only when its colder? You may have sensitive teeth, so the air causes them to ache more than others. |

Start from scratch. http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/2/2_3/181.shtml Yes, I'm serious. Work on your breathing technique and the landing of your foot. You're not just striking heel, you want to lay it down and roll it. Saves joints and helps preserve momentum. Get comfy shoes that fit your feet. Do lots of pushups and pullups and core exercises. Everything emanates from your core. Get them strong and it'll make it easier to run. |

I've been trying to work on the landing of my feet, mostly due to the fact that running can be pretty damn painful if you're...ahem...as "husky" as I am. I also have a decent pair of shoes, since foot comfort and proper support is the key to total-body comfort. I need to work on breathing and form though, since I run out of steam too quickly and develop low back pain after about .75 mi. |
