I need to be able to transport my mountain bike to the hills and I want to get a decent bike rack for my car. I drive a 09 Camry that is in decent shape so I dont want it to leave gouges like the last bike rack I had.

If anyone has any recommendations please chime in.

Thanks

Can you get a hitch on the car?? a hitch-mount bike rack is not going to leave any marks on the car at all...

This problem is why I don't use my car to move my bikes.

I only use my Jeep, because I don't want to bang up my car.  My old car I didn't care about as much...

Yep.  A hitch-mounted bike rack beats the hell out of roof/trunk/etc mounted racks.

I have an 08 Scion and hitch-mount is the way I went.  No regrets.

The only Issue I have with my hitch Mount is the fact that it is a procedure to take it off.  I have an Outback and it folds down to open the back but I would still like to be able to take it off more easily to run it through a car wash or something.....

I have a Saris Bones trunk rack I've used on a bunch of different cars and never had any damage. Usually have two MTBs on it.

So it seems that a hitch rack would be the best option, but I am not even sure if I can make that work with my car.

how about these roof racks? I saw a few near the trail this weekend. What are the advantages/disadvantages?

I've always had roof racks.

Advantages:  Bikes are away from road grit; bikes are in a position where they can't be hit by another car (parking lot being the primary risk area); fork-mounted is very secure and easy to lock.

Disadvantages:  Bikes more exposed to rocks kicked up by traffic (never had a bike hit); can be a high reach depending on vehicle; negative effects on gas mileage; need a wheel mount or have to put wheels inside car

Not to mention the necessity to always remember CLEARANCE.

True, although I've never scraped a bike off my roof.  I have friends who have done it though.

Has anyone have issues with trunk mounted racks having the cradle straps loosen (straps that attach the bike to the rack) while driving?

There was time that I used a trunk rack with my first racing bike (Reagan was president):  we almost lost the rack from the straps pulling through the buckle.  However, my and my buddy's bikes were wrapped with sheet plastic to protect them from the salt on PA Highways while driving from home (Erie) to Annapolis at the end of winter break.

I've never had a roof mounted rack, but I've seen numerous photos of bikes crunched from forgetful owners entering the garage with the bike on the roof.

Not with a decent trunk mount system. Yakima racks are good racks. That's what I carry my bike with and has worked out great for me.

Situational awareness and habit patterns are key.
