The wife wants to start biking around so I'm looking for good starter bikes for her and I.  Something that wont break the bank.  Hoping to spend less than $700 for both.

Mostly probably going to be biking around around the giant cemetary next to where we live (tons of well maintained paved roads, some roads with decently steep inclines).  Probably will go to bike trails in the Metroparks.  Nothing too crazy.

Anyone have advice on what to look for and where?

I have a Trek 7.2 fx and it's awesome for commuting to and from work or hauling ass for some exercise. I picked it up for a little under 500 on sale.

ETA.... 2 bikes will knock you out of the 700 range.

Craigslist, search for Trek and Gary Fisher.

Should be able to get three gently used bikes for $700 or less.

I'd have to agree. Also try Cannondale and Specialized, both very popular bikes. There's always a ton of bikes out here in AZ on Craigslist, and most of 'em are in your price range.

You can get a year or 2 old Cannondale  29er for that price.

If your going to be shopping on CL you need to have some idea of what size fits you and the missus

if your bikes aren't comfortable you won't ride them very much  !!

If I'm looking for a Trek, what size fram would be good for an average sized guy about 5 11?

Give FELT some thought. The  Z85 or Z95 both are good starter road bikes

Rough guess for a road frame would be 54-56 cm.

In addition to the Trek 7, the Specialized Sirrus is a good hybrid. I found a 2012 used on CL for $275 last fall, it's a very nice bike that's great for exercise, commuting or just a nice ride. There are quite a few hybrids like these, they're very versatile fun bikes.
