Which type is best for plyo type pushups, ab work, etc?  I see that they sell leather, rubber, vinyl, handled, and other types.

I am looking at the Valeo 8 lb. rubber ones.  Are they good?

I have experience with 2 types:

Leather Dynamax balls. Very nice, but ever so slightly unbalanced

Yellor rubber slam balls- can't remember the brand, sorry. They're full of sand basically and are harder. I actually like these really well. I'll try to find out what brand they are for ya.

A quick google search of "Homemade Medicine Balls" turns up some interesting results.

The basics of it

Basketball
Tire Plug Kit
Funnel
Sand/Kitty Litter/Bird seed

Make two holes with tire rasp (bird seed may require a bigger hole), one for air to go out one for weight to in.  Fill Basketball with material remembering different density equals out to different weights in the same volume of space.  Plug wholes with rubber plugs making sure to use plenty of sealant.  Trim the excess and profit.

I have different size basket balls and play sand, just haven't got around to making them just yet.  They aren't perfect by descriptions on the interwebz, but I am really only out the $3 dollars for the sand and $5 dollars to buy some more tire plugs the next time I go to the Autostore.

I should have mentioned this before. I've done this 3 times, with varying results. The best one I made I did like this:

basketball with a very small cut, use a funnel to fill with sand- I used a bag of play sand from Home Depot. Use rubber cement to fill the small hole, then wrap the whole thing with duct tape.

The whole thing costs about $5-$10 depending on what you already have.
