Anyone have a vitamin D deficiency?

Apparently, I do.  Doc says to take a supplement, 2000ui, daily.  Apparently my farmers tan indicates I'm not outside enough.

This vitamin D supplement smells like shit.

If you're taking vitamin D, what's been your experiences?

Only had a cold or flu once in 4 years since I started taking it.

What I'm taking are little gelcaps, whatever they carry at WalMart... have not noticed any issue with taste or smell.

I order gel-caps from Amazon. I also rarely get sick, not sure if it's that or my diet that helps that though.

My GF was diagnosed with it a year and a half ago.  An Ironman triathlete and Boston qualifier, she was suffering from fatigue, chronic muscle soreness, and inability to recover from even modest training efforts.  Doc put her on a 50K IU dose once weekly and within 2-3 weeks the improvement was remarkable.  She was her old self again.

I started taking a couple thousand IU/day along with calcium after I broke my collarbone and it was healing poorly.  No noticeable difference for me.

Well, I hope my effects will be similar to what your GF experienced.

I was a (mainly half, but some full) marathon runner up to only a few months ago.  Haven't been able to shake an injury in my leg, doc says just give it rest.  Six months later...still hurts.  I ran my last 1/2 marathon May 7th, and I couldn't run 3 miles today if I had to.

Also suffering from the chronic fatigue...I can fall asleep at 9pm, and sleep to 8am without much problem, when only two years ago, 11pm to 5am was plenty.  It's been a very dramatic change in 18 months (and I'm only 29).

Her experience is encouraging.  I hope mine is similar.

a 50k (50,000) or 5k dose?  The pills I got were 2,000IU, surely she wasn't taking 25 of those a day?

I also got mine from Walmart this morning.  They are the Spring Valley brand.

I just caught a whiff of pill when I opened the lid.  Took my first one today with lunch, no aftertaste or anything that is sometimes common with the fish oil I also take.

I guess it was my fault for sticking my nose in the bottle.    Thankfully, they don't taste like they smell.

You can buy 10,000 IU pills for a pretty reasonable price.

Yup, twice now.  Both times it came back "normal."  When I asked for the hard numbers, they were 350 and 400 for the tests.  A bit on the low side, but still within the normal range.  Doc doesn't think it is low enough to treat with a supplement.

Can you over do-it on Vitamin D?  I did see 5,000iu pills, but to be honest, I didn't look really any further than the 2,000iu that the doc recommended.

That is pretty low.  How is your sleep?  You may have sleep apnea, which can explain the chronic fatigue.  Sleep apnea will also wreak havoc with your testosterone level.

Yes, you can die from Vitamin D toxicity.  But I think that only happens once you get up in the 100,000+ IU per day.

I take 4000 IU per day.  If I'm outside all day, I usually don't take any that day.  My last Vitamin D levels were 70 ng/dL.

Vitamin D deficiency has been correlated with a ton of problems ranging from chronic fatigue to cancer.  Read Dr. Hollick's book for detailed information.

Yeah, you have to have a ridiculous amount. 10k is safe, if not overkill.

I'll ask her - I think it was a single 50K tablet once/week.  It was a prescription dose - her levels were very low (blood test).  I've read that there is movement towards increasing the RDA to ~2000IU.

In his book, Holick mentions that after spending a long time outside in the sun (midday is the best time of day to get the UVB rays that are good for you), you get about 20,000 IUs.

Since our ancestors spent all day outside, I suspect that their vitamin D levels were substantially higher than even the 70-100 ng/dL that some of the more aggressive integrative doctors will recommend.

Also, Holick has identified another 5-10 photonutrients that your body gets from the sun.  Nobody really understands yet what benefits you get from those.

I think it is better to get your vitamin D from the sun, but if you can't, then supplementation is a good idea.

Yep, that's exactly why I feel comfortable with 10k.

Agreed, but I work in an office.  I do get out to train (triathlete), but that's primarily early mornings on weekdays.  Early mornings on weekends too, but those sessions are 3-4 hours.  One other problem is that sunscreen inhibits Vit D synthesis, but as a blue-eyed redhead, I won't train long outdoors without slathering myself.

Ok, good info everyone.

I think I will take two or three caps per day.  Each pill is 2,000, so three would be 4,000-6,000ui.  When I finish this bottle, I'll look for the 5,000ui or 10,000ui pills.

Single pill.  50000 IU once weekly for 8 weeks.  Her Vitamin D level was in the teens prior to the supplement.
