I've always been a big guy , I'm 34 , 6ft7 300+ , carry all my weight in my torso. I haven't been to a doc in 15 years , got to feeling pretty bad so I finally went. My blood pressure was referred to as "stroke pressure" , 239/136. Honestly scared the shit out of me and I want to get in better shape. I live out in the sticks so a gym isn't an option , I have a dirt road to walk. I already use very little salt but I've tightened down even more on that. Like many of us , money is tight so what I pick up from the grocery store is selective. I'd just appreciate some advice on a track to get on to get my bp and my weight under control. Thanks , MM |

Don't buy pre-made meals- they cost more and are high in sodium. Make your own stuff, if time is an issue then buy a crock pot. Buy lots of meat and tons of green leafy veggies (corn is not a vegetable by the way). Basically, eat real food. Start walking as much as you can, there are tons of body weight routines out there too that would do you a lot of good. Good luck. |

Like stated above there are lots of bodyweight exercises and you can walk/jog a couple dumbells and a kettleball or two can take you even further than that without much expense, also most tire places will give you an old tractor tire if you go ask for one and there is a ton of stuff you can do with that. go to you tube and search for exercises with some of the things i have mentioned and a ton of stuff will come up. whenever you go from doing no exercise to excercising you will see massive results quickly but you have to make changes that you can stick with for life not just go on a diet because diets last a few months.
on to nutrition. i take my lunch with me to work everyday and eat basically every meal from home with the exception of maybe 2 a week i.e. on a date out with the guys etc. i eat six small meals a day and typically spend 65-80$ a week at the grocery store(not much when you compare it to eating out and take the quality in account) off the top of my head here is list. 18 eggs 1gallon of fat free milk (organic) quick oats organic salad mix asaragus squash broccoli 3 types of fruit enough for the week, this week i got a watermelon some pears and some bananas Peanutbutter 3lbs frozen chicken breast 1lb salmon filets 1lb frozen shrimp 1lb bag of 99%fat free beef jerky bag of brown rice i will also by protein powder, multi vitamins and some bars and what not online but only about once a month |

Thanks , MM I am glad to hear you made it into a doc's office. There are many $4 bp meds the doctor can prescribe for you while you are on your journey to lose weight. I am somewhat surprised you didn't end up in the hospital with that pressure. What was the doctor's suggestions? Weight loss suggestions? Either start calorie counting or decreasing portion size and work from there. |

Quoted: I ended going to the ER since I haven't had a doctor in over a decade. They fixed me up with 2 prescriptions to hold me over and see a regular doctor asap. I've got an appointment today so hopefully I'll find out where I'm at and go from there.Quoted: I've always been a big guy , I'm 34 , 6ft7 300+ , carry all my weight in my torso. Biggest things for starting out are to cut out the crap, i.e. sodas, beer, fast food/processed food. Drink water and milk, and really just make healthier choices. I cut out McDonalds and started eating Jersey Mikes wraps. May not be the healthiest choice, but its definitely better. Portions are also a big thing, dont eat until your completely stuffed, but be satisfied with your meal. Snacking always got me, just kinda searched for something and it was usually garbage. All the good I did I cancelled it out with a snack. Fruits, beef jerkey, nuts, etc are all better than the junk thats out there. Just remember, its not an overnight thing, it takes time and can be a long journey. Its easy to be discouraged when it doesnt happen quickly. Keep at it, its worth it. Good luck! |

Yea my biggest problem is not eating but once a day so I eat too much and it's always late. I've cut out sodas and nearly all of my tea , still have my coffee. Nearly everything i eat now comes off the grill and then stem some broccoli or something. I'm actually doing better than I thought I would with portion control but the thought of death will make ya do things you didn't think ya could. I'm finally getting use to the medication so I can get out and start walking a couple times a day |

You should read "Why We Get Fat", by Gary Taubes: http://www.amazon.com/Why-We-Get-Fat-About/dp/0307272702
It explains what is happening to our body when we eat carbs, protein, and fat. According to Taubes, most of the diet advice we've been given for the past 30 years isn't really backed up by science. Given how obesity has become an even larger problem during that time, as well as my experience with my own diet, I'm inclined to believe him. He also wrote a really good article in the NY Times that you should read: http://www.nytimes.com/2011/04/17/magazine/mag-17Sugar-t.html Recently, I've had good results from following a low-carb/paleo diet. It's helped me shed some of that stubborn weight around my midsection that has always been difficult to get rid of. According to the theory, it should also reduce your blood pressure. Check out this website: http://robbwolf.com. He has a book on paleo eating, and a pretty good podcast. For some great home workouts that require minimal equipment, try http://www.bodyrock.tv |
