Is there a trick to timing a brake with a crush washer?  Would I be better off using shims instead of the crush washer? I'm trying to install a Fortis RED brake on my Ruger Precision Rifle and when it makes contact with the crush washer it's a little less than a half turn shy of where it needs to be.  I've never used a crush washer before but I have the cupped side toward the muzzle.  How much torque do you dare apply trying to "crush" the washer?

half turn is good, crush that bitch.  If you want a little margin for error sand the one side of the washer a little with a piece of sandpaper laid flat on workbench.

1- don't use a crush washer on a brake.
2- shim it to time to 11:50 or so.
3- don't crank the hell out of it, too much torque and you can distort the bore. 20-40 ft/lbs of torque is plenty.

Trigonometry, a lathe, and hand tight with some thread locker.
