I am looking to buy a .308Win with a 20"bbl and 1:10 twist.
I have seen all the threads asking for most accurate target rounds and see 168 and 175gr mentioned a lot. What about the most accurate hunting rounds? What type of bullet do you select for long range coyote, and what bullet to you select for larger game like elk? What are the bullet weights that are handled by 1:10 twist? What about 1:11 or 1:12? |
| 168 and 175 aren't necessarily the most accurate, they're capable of being pushed the furthest while still supersonic from the .308's relatively limited powder capacity. For elk, honestly I'd like a little more snot in the round. Something like a full house 180grain .30-06. If you can't do that then I'd go with an all copper bullet like Barnes TTSX in 150grain weight and keep the shots under 300m. For deer, good ol' 150grain pointed soft points or nosler ballistic tip or similar. For vermin and predators I like 110grain semi-jackets for stuff like squirrels and bunnies and 110grain Sierra HP's. The 110's do 3150fps from my 24" barrel which has the same effect as a hand grenade on soft targets. 150's I've taken more deer than you could fit in a semi trailer with. The Sierra 165 grain spire point boat tail is probably perfect for elk under 300m from a .308. |

I picked up 10 boxes of ADI 165 grain gameking from sgammo for $15 a piece. The poi is the same at 100 with fgmm. I figured that the 165 grain gameking is just about perfect for everything.
They are not quite as accurate but still 1moa. Im glad it worked out this way as I can save the gamekings to hunt with, use matchings for little targets and zqi ball to plink with. Zqi shoots exactly 1 moa below my zero so its easy to hold or adjust. |

1:12 will handle 175, 17 and 185's just fine.
178gr and 185 are your best long range bullets for shooting distance. The .308 is not a good long range hunting gun for large game. It drops like a rock and doesn't possess a ton of energy at range. Do you already have the gun in mind, or are you looking? |

I figured with the right round it would be good at hunting out to 800yds for large game, and with the other right kind of round be accurate to 1000yds for paper precision. Had considered 30-06 for hunting too. Mostly looking at cost and availability of the rounds. 300 Win Mag is too expensive to shoot and too hard to find. Thought about 270 for distance, but wasn't sure it would have same power as 308. Did you have another suggestion? |

My savage 10T shooting a 178 A-max will hit @602.42 ft lbs @1000 yards with my current reload. Not that I plan on trying it but not bad energy. Would recommend something a little bigger if available though. |
